I HAVE NOTHING AT ALL FOR THIRTY-ONE." She is not lamenting. She is auditing — and the audit finds against the thirty-one, which produced no paper. THE MOMENT SHE STOPPED: A MAN IN THE QUEUE CHECKING FOUR YEARS OF RECEIPTS TWICE, and she knew that figure to the penny, and could not remember something else, and that was that.

AND ADDS ONE ITEM FOR THE FORM the man in the queue, younger, with the look she has in photographs from the second year "IF YOU FIND HIM, ASK HIM WHAT HE THINKS HE IS KEEPING, AND THEN ASK HIM AGAIN IN FOUR YEARS." She is seventy-one, sleeps badly, and is the last person who knows how he took his tea — half a cup, then the rest when it had gone off the boil, so the first half was always too hot and he drank it anyway — and when she goes, that goes. FOR ELEVEN DAYS SHE COULD NOT GO INTO THE KITCHEN. THAT IS GRIEF. It is the only thing left in this city that arrives without an invoice.
