Fifty-four. The Last Word

The father's slips record two hundred thirty-nine retained words. The new board requires three hundred, sixty more than before, making the old threshold two hundred forty. His shortfall is therefore sixty-one words, not sixty: he was already one word short of the earlier requirement. These quantities concern retained words. The number she is hired to announce changes the distance still ahead of him.

A borrowed breath makes the announcement sound kind. She asks for her own, catching between three and hundred. The engineer removes it, then restores it at her insistence. She hears the catch before signing. In the new-year broadcast, the breath has moved after the words and sounds like relief. The same recorded material now performs a different part in the sentence.

Her two accepted words earn money, not a transfer into her father's retained vocabulary. The private first take costs half her fee. She could play it to her mother, showing where the breath belonged. Instead, she places bread money in her mother's pocket and helps say the next word across the water. The household receives support; passage for her father is not shown to have been bought.
