Twenty. Stimulus

The first playback places her body beside the recording and the unit. After four notes, her left heel rises before the recorded scrape. The old heel catches before note five. On the fifth note, the unit's lights change rate; on the sixth, its fans slow and the cabinets settle with them. The order is observable without deciding whether memory, music or the unit directs her movement.

She tests the playback, lifts the needle and hears the fans continue. Cooling is one explanation she considers. She resumes the record, misses the man's words again, then follows the visiting unit's lead and unplugs it. Its lights go out while the licensed cabinets keep humming. When she plays again, she is on the wrong foot at the scrape. Outside, another attempted step misses. These actions suggest an attempt at agency without proving release from influence.

The recurring stimulus window runs from three to four in the morning, every fourteenth. Its opening and closing logs list no persons present, beside a scene in which she plays, touches and dances. An estate's extra four-unit spring charge and her belief in a cabinet's gladness remain distinct. A decommissioned, empty bay still receives its record played to the end. The log records delivery while the partner's words remain unheard.
