The daily roll and the desk-card renewal have separate schedules. Her name is answered at nine; the card renews on Thursdays. Renewals stop in the year of long division, but the head retains her name for another unpaid term. The teacher continues reading it, then leaves the following year without giving a reason. Another name takes the seat. Twenty years later, the reunion returns to the paper register. The sequence does not prove why the teacher left.

The desk fee, the retained name and the school's funding are connected but distinct. Keeping the unpaid name preserves the headcount and funding for one term. That does not establish free continuation, or decide whether the head acts from kindness, expedience or both. The old paper register survives outside the funding record without acquiring the power to restore the child.

Two unremembered movements answer each other. In the school photograph, the children beside her have moved apart; neither remembers doing so. At the reunion, the former neighbor puts her hand flat on the table without deciding to. The guide keeps the visual change and the bodily gesture together without explaining their causes. The returning silence remains eight years old.
