Forty-five. The Reserve

The final voice recording does not match the daughter's bodily memory. Her father reads fluently after his stroke, while her own mouth supplies the stumble absent from the recording. Two remarks interrupt the reading from outside the book. She plays the drive twice and withholds it from her brothers. The difference is observable; the source of that flawless voice remains unsettled.

The siblings burn the drives before the sale. Withdrawal of lot thirty-one brings a charge. A photographer comes within the week, even photographing her raised finger. A week later, a client offers the full reserve for the residue. Her elder brother's autumn renewal is marked for review without a reason. By summer, the ash is in the bean row and the offer remains open. This order alone does not prove retaliation.

Burning stops what could have been made from the drives, but does not end the claim on their residue. The ash enters cultivated soil. Paper albums remain hidden beneath the daughter's bed, outside this catalog. Beans grow without closing the offer. Destruction, concealment and cultivation therefore have different results; being uncataloged does not establish immunity from every possible valuation.
