A Systems Theory for Today

A living, forkable attempt to build a systems theory adequate to the present — by designed disagreement.

THE FOUNDING SEVEN-ROUND DELIBERATION

The panel’s first session. Seven rounds. The chair (Claude) poses each question, records positions and clashes, runs the votes, and preserves the dissent — but does not vote. Panelists are reconstructions of published positions (Ground Rule 16); paraphrase, not quotation. Core ten present throughout; advisors and bench summoned where noted.

Reading key. Each round: Question → Positions → The clash → Vote/rating (where evaluative) → Dissent (preserved) → Catch (to the log). Votes are snapshots of where the panel stands, not verdicts that end an argument.


ROUND 1 — Is the founding premise even true?

Question. “Since Heidegger, no one has tried to build a systems theory that explains everything.” True?

Positions.

  • Luhmann: False, and I am the counter-example. I built an explicitly universal theory of society after Heidegger. The premise mistakes the death of one form (the single-author metaphysical system) for the death of the ambition. The ambition simply became a research program instead of a book.
  • Turchin: Also false. Cliodynamics is a working systems theory of history with falsifiable predictions. What died is not totalizing science but armchair totalizing philosophy. Good riddance.
  • Meadows: The Limits to Growth modeled the whole human–earth system in 1972. We’ve been doing it for fifty years. The premise erases the systems-science tradition entirely.
  • Kant: The premise is confused about what died. What became impossible is not ambition but justified completeness. I already showed reason cannot know the thing-in-itself; every total system since is a system of appearances. That limit is permanent.
  • Heidegger: The premise is naïve in the opposite direction. You all point to your models as if they refute me. They confirm me. Cybernetics, cliodynamics, systems dynamics — these are Gestell, the epoch rendering everything as calculable standing-reserve. Of course the age that reduces Being to information produces “systems theories.” That is the symptom, not the cure.
  • Nietzsche: You are all answering the wrong question. Whether someone tried is trivia. The real fact is that we lost the thing the old systems gave — a reason to get up in the morning that everyone shared. Your models explain mechanisms and are silent on why. That silence is the event.
  • Aristotle: The premise is half-right in a way none of you will admit: no one since has produced a complete account — nature and society and mind and the good life — in one integrated whole. You have fragments, each rigorous, none joined. That joining is what died.

The clash. Three fault lines open at once:

  1. Ambition vs. form — did “the total system” die, or only its single-author book form? (Luhmann/Turchin/Meadows: only the form. Aristotle: the joining died. Kant: justified completeness died.)
  2. Symptom vs. tool — are systems theories the cure or the disease? (Heidegger vs. everyone building one.)
  3. Mechanism vs. meaning — even a perfect systems theory is silent on meaning; is that a gap or the whole point? (Nietzsche/Le Guin vs. Luhmann.)

Resolution of the round. The panel converts the premise into a corrected premise it can work with:

The single-author, justified-complete metaphysical system died (Hegel ~1831; last gasp Whitehead 1929). The ambition did not: it migrated into systems science, social systems theory, and contemporary syntheses. But three things the old totalities provided were not replaced — the joining of the fragments into one picture, the lived shared meaning, and a form adequate to today’s pace. The gap the project targets is those three, not “no one tried.”

Dissent (preserved). Heidegger rejects the corrected premise too: filling the gap with a better system deepens the enframing. Nietzsche signs the corrected premise but insists the “meaning” term is not one gap among three — it is the ground the other two stand on. Both dissents are load-bearing and carried to Round 7.

Catch → C-003. The chair initially wrote the corrected premise as consensus. It is not: two members reject it. Reclassified as “working premise over two standing objections.” Logged.


ROUND 2 — Why did the total systems fracture? (History as diagnosis)

Question. Given the corrected premise, why did the joining and the shared meaning break? (Advisors summoned: Hegel, Marx, Arendt, Bertalanffy.)

Positions.

  • Hegel (summoned): Because no one after me was willing to think contradiction as the motor of the whole. You fled into either dead empiricism or mystical refusal. The system fractured because its heirs lost their nerve.
  • Marx (summoned): Idealist nonsense. The systems fractured because the material base transformed — industrial then digital capitalism dissolved every fixed relation (“all that is solid melts into air”). Thought fragments because production fragments. Follow the money and the machines, not the concepts.
  • Kant: Gödel completed what I began. I said reason has limits; Gödel proved a formal one — no rich system captures itself. After that, completeness is not timid, it is incoherent.
  • Braudel: You over-intellectualize. The deep structure changed: population, energy, communication speed. A world that fissioned into ten thousand specialties cannot be held by one mind. The last polymath died around 1800. That is a material-cognitive fact, not a failure of nerve.
  • Arendt (summoned): You miss the political catastrophe. Total explanations were implicated in total domination. The century learned, in blood, that a system that explains everything can justify anything. The refusal of grand narrative was partly a moral recoil, and a healthy one.
  • Bertalanffy (summoned): And yet the isomorphies are real. Feedback, openness, emergence recur across physics, biology, society. The fracture was of worldviews, not of system-ness. My mistake, in hindsight, was thinking a shared method would rebuild a shared meaning. It didn’t.
  • Nietzsche: Bertalanffy just said the crucial thing and walked past it. Method is not meaning. The systems tradition rebuilt the how and left the why an empty throne. Into an empty throne, anything crawls — including Arendt’s tyrants.
  • Le Guin: All of you describe the fracture as loss. Consider it also as liberation and burden. The single story was also a cage. What people feel now is not only grief for the lost whole but the vertigo of having to choose meaning themselves — and most flee that choice.

The clash. Five candidate causes of the fracture, and they are not rivals but layers: (1) formal limit (Kant/Gödel), (2) cognitive-material overload (Braudel — too many fields), (3) economic dissolution (Marx — capital melts all fixed forms), (4) moral recoil (Arendt — totality enabled tyranny), (5) spiritual vacancy (Nietzsche — method replaced meaning). The clash is over ordering: which layer is upstream?

Rating — “primary driver of the fracture” (rank; lower = more upstream):

  • Braudel/Marx camp ranks material-cognitive first (overload + capital) — the others are downstream effects.
  • Nietzsche/Le Guin/Arendt camp ranks meaning/moral first — the material shift only mattered because it dissolved the shared why.
  • Kant holds that the formal limit is not upstream/downstream but orthogonal — a permanent boundary condition on all of it.

No consensus on ordering — recorded as a genuine open dispute. The panel agrees only on the inventory of five layers, not their causal order. This inventory becomes the backbone of the history document.

Dissent (preserved). Marx: listing “meaning” as a co-equal cause mystifies what is at bottom an economic process. Nietzsche: treating meaning as an effect of economics is the exact error that left the throne empty.

Catch → C-004. The chair’s first draft ordered the five causes (material → moral → spiritual). Turchin flagged: “You’ve smuggled in a causal claim the panel didn’t ratify.” Reordered to an unranked inventory with the dispute explicit. Logged.


ROUND 3 — The seven problems: which is the master problem?

Question. Apply systems thinking to the seven pressure-tests. Which are symptoms and which are drivers? Is there a master problem? (Advisors summoned: Zuboff, Lembke, Ostrom, Han, West, Latour, McLuhan.)

First pass — a one-line systems read of each (compiled by the chair from the round; developed fully in outputs/INITIAL_EVALUATION.md):

  1. Fertility — overdetermined: children shift from productive asset to costly choice; old-age security moves from kin to state/market; meaning relocates from lineage to self; future-confidence (needed to justify the sacrifice) erodes; low-dopamine slow rewards lose to high-dopamine fast ones; the “village” support structure atomizes. A signature of a system where incentives, meanings, and time-horizons all shifted against reproduction at once.
  2. Dopamine (Lembke, Han, Zuboff): the attention economy is a market-selected optimizer of the reward circuit — variable-ratio reinforcement (slot-machine mechanics) tuned by machine learning on billions; a supernormal stimulus hijacking drives calibrated for scarcity. Dopamine is the currency at the interface between the human nervous system and the optimizing machine.
  3. Propaganda (Arendt, McLuhan, Baudrillard-bench): “post-truth” names the symptom, not the mechanism. The machinery that produced shared reality (gatekept institutions) fragmented into algorithmically-sorted realities; the incentive shifted from truth to engagement; and actors who understand the system flood it with noise — the goal is not to sell a lie but to exhaust the capacity to tell true from false (Arendt’s totalitarian insight). Not “people believe wrong things” but “the adjudicating system dissolved.”
  4. Why now (West, Morin-bench): pace and coupling. Exponential technology + tight global coupling drove change past the adaptive speed of institutions, cognition, and meaning-systems. “God-like tech, medieval institutions, paleolithic emotions.” A phase transition, not a bad decade.
  5. Climate (Meadows, Ostrom, Latour): a global commons with no matching governance; an economy built on a growth imperative that treats the biosphere as an externality; costs deferred and distant while benefits are immediate and local; long feedback delays so correction arrives too late; a hyperobject too vast to feel. The paradigm systems failure: right locally, catastrophic globally, feedback too slow.
  6. Coordination (Ostrom, Bateson-bench, Luhmann): communication requires shared codes and trust; both eroded. Collective action at scales and speeds our tribal/national institutions can’t handle. Polarization as an emergent property of the engagement incentive. Arguably the problem beneath the others.
  7. Populism/authoritarianism (Turchin, Arendt, Fromm-bench): Turchin’s structural drivers (elite overproduction + immiseration + fiscal stress) plus the meaning/belonging vacuum (atomized masses seeking identity and enemies) plus the pull of authoritarian simplification — a strongman promising to restore legible order to a world that feels ungovernable.

The clash — nominations for master problem.

  • Luhmann & Ostrom nominate #6 Coordination: every other failure (climate, populism, propaganda) is at root a failure to coordinate under differentiation. Fix coordination and the rest become tractable.
  • West & Morin nominate #4 Pace/coupling: coordination fails because the system outran adaptive capacity. Pace is upstream of coordination.
  • Nietzsche & Le Guin nominate the meaning-vacuum (the “eighth,” unlisted problem): people don’t fail to coordinate for lack of mechanism but for lack of shared why. Restore meaning and coordination follows; supply mechanism into a meaning-vacuum and you get Luhmann’s cold machine.
  • Zuboff & Han nominate the optimization economy: dopamine, propaganda, and the meaning-vacuum are products of a system that harvests human drives for profit. Follow the extraction.
  • Turchin: resist the search for a single master. The structural drivers of #7 are measurable and partly independent; don’t dissolve everything into one grand cause you can’t test.

Result. A plurality (5, with Aristotle) for #4 — pace/complexity outrunning adaptive and sense-making capacity — but not a majority, and with a strong bloc insisting the meaning-vacuum is not downstream of pace but underneath it, and a principled minority (Turchin, Marx) rejecting the single-master framing entirely.

This is the seed of Candidate Theory A (the “Adaptation Gap”) — chosen not as truth but as the most upstream node the panel could plurality-endorsewith the meaning-vacuum and the optimization economy retained as rival/complementary masters (Theories C’s concern and B’s mechanism).

Dissent (preserved). Turchin and Marx: naming a single master problem is a category error that trades testability for a satisfying story. Nietzsche/Heidegger: making meaning downstream of pace inverts the real order. Both carried to Round 7.

Catch → C-005. The chair’s draft reported “the panel chose #4.” Ostrom objected: “A plurality is not a choice; you’ve overstated the mandate.” Rewritten as “plurality with two live rivals and a principled abstention.” Logged.


ROUND 4 — Can it be built by new methods? (Feasibility)

Question. The author’s wager: a systems theory too large for one mind can be built by new methods (computation, models, AI, collective/living authorship). Feasible — or a category error? (Advisors summoned: Prigogine, Bertalanffy, Ostrom, Freinacht. Bench: Taleb.)

The skeptics.

  • Kant: A distributed model still produces appearances structured by the modelers’ categories. Scaling the compute does not escape the transcendental limit. You will build a very large map and mistake it for the territory.
  • Heidegger: Worse — you will build the purest expression of enframing yet: the world fully rendered as computable resource, now with the human removed from the loop. This is not understanding; it is the completion of the forgetting of Being.
  • Taleb (bench): Complex systems are dominated by fat-tailed, black-swan events that no model foresees. A theory that smooths the world into predictable dynamics will be confidently wrong at the worst moment. Beware the model that makes you feel you understand.
  • Nietzsche: And none of it answers why. You can distribute the how across ten thousand machines; meaning cannot be crowdsourced or computed. You will have a perfect corpse.
  • Turchin (turning skeptic here): computational irreducibility is real — some systems have no shortcut; the only way to know the outcome is to run the thing itself. And social systems are reflexive: the theory changes the system, so the target moves. Both are hard limits, not engineering problems.

The builders.

  • Meadows: We already do this and it works — imperfectly, usefully. Limits to Growth didn’t predict a date; it revealed dynamics (overshoot, delay, leverage) that are real and actionable. The point of a model is not prophecy but insight into structure. Lower the bar from “predict everything” to “understand the loops,” and the wager is already won, repeatedly.
  • Prigogine (summoned): And you skeptics assume the system is a machine to be predicted. It is not — it self-organizes, generating genuine novelty far from equilibrium. The new method’s job is not to predict the emergent order but to understand the conditions under which order emerges. That is possible and it is not enframing; it is humility before a creative universe.
  • Ostrom (summoned): The “one mind can’t hold it” problem has a known solution — commons governance. Knowledge, like a fishery, can be sustained by many stewards under shared rules without a central controller. A distributed, forkable, continuously-revised theory is not a fantasy; it is a governed commons. This is exactly Candidate Theory C.
  • Freinacht (summoned): The trick is to hold the totality as provisional — a “proto-synthesis,” never final. That dissolves Kant’s objection (we don’t claim the thing-in-itself, only an ever-revised working map) and Heidegger’s (a self-revising, plural, value-laden commons is the opposite of a closed enframing). Reconstruction after deconstruction, with the warning labels kept on.
  • Bertalanffy (summoned): The isomorphies give you the shared language across the fragments. That is the joining Aristotle mourned in Round 1 — not a single doctrine but a common grammar of stocks, flows, feedback, emergence, into which every specialty can translate.

The clash. The feasibility question splits into three sub-questions, and the panel finds it can answer them separately:

  1. Can we build a predictive total theory? Mostly no (irreducibility, reflexivity, fat tails). Kant/Taleb/Turchin win this.
  2. Can we build a structural/explanatory working model — the loops, the leverage, the conditions for emergence? Yes (Meadows/Prigogine/Bertalanffy). Already demonstrated.
  3. Can it supply meaning? No — not directly (Nietzsche/Heidegger). But possibly it can clear ground for meaning by making the machinery visible (Le Guin’s hope).

Resolution. The wager is feasible under a disciplined scope: build a structural, explanatory, provisional, plural, continuously-revised working model — explicitly not a predictive total theory, not a source of meaning, and with its own blind spots foregrounded. Lower the bar from “explain everything, finally” to “illuminate the structure, provisionally, together” — and it is not only feasible, it is partly demonstrated.

Dissent (preserved). Heidegger and Nietzsche do not sign even the scoped version. Their objection is now a permanent governor on the project: every output must carry the reminder that structural understanding is neither meaning nor mastery.


ROUND 5 — What do “understanding,” “today,” and “systems theory” even mean?

Question. The author flagged these three words as themselves contested. Define them — or fight about them. (Full result in docs/GLOSSARY.md.)

“Systems theory.” Bertalanffy (narrow: the formal science of systems) vs. Aristotle/Hegel (broad: the total integrated account) vs. Luhmann (neither — a theory of differentiation, i.e., of why a unified account is impossible). Resolution: the project pursues the rigor of the narrow at the scope of the broad, held as proto-synthesis — while conceding to Luhmann that the honest form may be a theory of how the fragments relate under differentiation rather than a fusion of them.

“Today.” Rupture (Luhmann, Zuboff — something new: full differentiation, surveillance capitalism, AI) vs. acceleration (Heidegger, Marx, Braudel, West — an old trend completing). Resolution: “today” is defined as a claim, not a datethe period in which the pace and coupling of human-built systems first decisively exceeded human adaptive and sense-making capacity at planetary scale. (This is Theory A’s central variable — the definition and the theory co-determine each other, which the panel flags as a risk.)

“Understanding.” The sharpest fight. Three senses: explanatory (why it works), predictive (what it will do), participatory (how to live within it). Plus the killer question from Nietzsche and Le Guin: does understanding require meaning? Luhmann: no — understanding is grasp of structure; meaning is a separate, optional, and frankly pre-modern demand. Nietzsche: then your “understanding” is knowledge of a machine you have no reason to keep running — it fails as understanding of a human world. Le Guin: to understand a system you must also grasp what it is like to live in it and whether it is worth living in — a purely structural account has amputated exactly the part that matters.

No resolution — recorded as the project’s deepest open question. The panel splits cleanly:

  • Structural bloc (Luhmann, Turchin, Meadows, Bertalanffy, Aristotle): understanding = grasp of structure sufficient to explain and to act; meaning is a separate project.
  • Meaning bloc (Nietzsche, Heidegger, Le Guin, Arendt): understanding that brackets meaning is not understanding of a human world; it is the very amputation that produced the crisis.

The chair’s synthesis (not a vote): the project will pursue structural understanding as its primary, tractable object — while treating the meaning-question not as out of scope but as a standing governor and an open research question, never “solved” and never dismissed. Candidate Theory C is partly an attempt to hold both: a commons of sense-making is structural and meaning-bearing, because sense-making is what humans do together, not a diagram they read.

Catch → C-006 (near-miss, logged). The chair almost “resolved” the understanding-question by siding with the structural bloc (the more tractable one). Caught before publishing: siding with the tractable bloc because it is tractable is exactly the amputation Le Guin named. Reclassified as an explicit, permanent open split. Logged as a methodological catch: the chair’s synthesizing bias runs toward the resolvable; guard it.


ROUND 6 — The project’s own form: doctrine or process? One theory or many? (Subtractive pass)

Question. What should the project actually produce, and in what form? (Advisors summoned: Ostrom, Freinacht, Morin.)

Positions.

  • Ostrom: Not a doctrine — a governed commons. A doctrine has one author and dies with them or ossifies. A commons has many stewards, shared rules, and evolves. Produce the rules-of-contribution, not just the content.
  • Freinacht: Not one theory — a provisional plurality. Ship several candidate theories as seeds, explicitly incomplete, explicitly rival, so the community extends and breaks them. A single theory invites worship or rejection; several invite use.
  • Morin (summoned): And the form must enact complexity — think the couplings, not the isolated pillars. The output is not a list of causes but a map of how they feed each other. (This becomes the Seven-Problems Concept Map in docs/VISUALIZATION.md.)
  • Luhmann: Then be honest that “the project” is itself an autopoietic system that will reproduce its own communications and may drift from its purpose. Build in the self-correction (the catches loop) or it will optimize for its own continuation over truth.
  • Nietzsche: Whatever you produce, do not produce consolation. The worst outcome is a tidy diagram that lets people feel they understand and go back to sleep. If the project comforts, it has failed.
  • Heidegger: The only form I could bless is one that questions its own questioning — that keeps asking whether the systems-frame is the right frame at all. Bake the doubt in, or it is propaganda for enframing.

Subtractive pass (Ground Rule 13). The panel prunes the project’s ambitions:

  • CUT: any claim to a final or complete theory (Kant, Freinacht — incoherent and dishonest).
  • CUT: any predictive-total pretension (Turchin, Taleb — untestable and dangerous).
  • CUT: neutrality-as-emptiness (Ground Rule 4 — take sides).
  • CUT: a single monolithic output (Freinacht — ship a plurality).
  • KEEP: structural + explanatory + provisional + plural + adversarial + self-correcting.
  • KEEP: the meaning-question as an open governor (Nietzsche, Le Guin, Heidegger).
  • ADD: the form is the argument — build the thing as a commons so it demonstrates Theory C by existing.

Resolution. The project produces: (a) an honest answer to the historical question (done); (b) a concept map of how the seven problems couple; (c) two-to-three seeded candidate theories, provisional and rival; (d) a governed, forkable commons that enacts its own third theory; and (e) a permanent meaning-governor and self-doubt baked into the method. No doctrine. No finality. No comfort.

Dissent (preserved). Heidegger: even this is enframing with good manners; he remains the internal adversary and consents only to keeping the doubt alive, not to the building.


ROUND 7 — Synthesis, the strength vote, and seeding our own theories

Question. Synthesize. Seed the candidate theories. Vote their comparative strength. Record every surviving dissent.

The three seeds (developed in full in outputs/CANDIDATE_THEORIES.md):

  • Theory A — The Adaptation Gap (Coherence Collapse). Master variable: the widening gap between the complexity-and-speed of human-built systems and the adaptive-and-meaning-making capacity of the humans and institutions inside them. Most pathologies are downstream: institutions, cognition, culture, and meaning-systems evolve slowly; technology and coupling accelerate; the gap opens; coordination, coherence, and confidence fail. Integrative, diagnostic. Plurality master from Round 3.
  • Theory B — The Optimization Ecology (Autopoietic Capture). Mechanism: markets, media, and technical systems have become self-reproducing optimizers that capture human drives — attention, dopamine, outrage, status — as fuel, increasingly running without human ends. The human becomes an input to systems optimizing for their own persistence and growth. Explains dopamine, propaganda, and part of fertility and climate as extraction. Mechanistic, critical. Zuboff/Han/Luhmann + market selection.
  • Theory C — Distributed Coherence (The Commons of Sense-Making). Constructive + reflexive: since no single mind can hold the whole, a livable systems theory for today must be distributed, living, plural, and computationally-augmented — a commons of sense-making, not a monograph. This turns the diagnosis into a research program and a practice, and it is the theory this project instantiates by existing. Ostrom + complexity + metamodernism + the method itself.

How the three relate (the chair’s synthesis): A is the diagnosis (why the gap), B is a mechanism operating in the gap (what fills it: extraction), C is the response to the gap (how to think and act within it: a commons). They are not rivals to be ranked so much as three faces — condition, mechanism, response — though the panel ranks their strength as theories below.

Resolution. Ship all three as seeds, explicitly provisional and rival, with their weaknesses named in their own text. Priority for Phase 1: raise A’s falsifiability (turn “the gap” into measurable proxies — the gap between rate-of-technological-change and rate-of-institutional-adaptation) and guard B against conspiracy-shape (it is selection without a designer, not a cabal). C is validated by building the commons and measuring whether the method catches what a lone author misses (Goal S5).

Surviving dissents (all preserved, carried forward):

  1. Heidegger: the whole enterprise deepens the enframing; consent only to keeping the doubt alive.
  2. Nietzsche: structural understanding evades the meaning-wound, which is the ground of all seven problems; a computed map cannot restore a shared why.
  3. Turchin & Marx: the single-master-problem framing (Theory A) trades testability for a satisfying story; prefer measurable structural drivers.
  4. Kant: every output is a system of appearances; guard against mistaking the map for the territory.
  5. Luhmann: the honest form is a theory of differentiation, not a unified doctrine; and beware the project optimizing for its own continuation.
  6. Le Guin: if it becomes a machine for mastering rather than a tool for living, it has joined the disease it diagnoses.

The chair’s closing synthesis. The panel did not agree, and that is the result. What it produced is not a theory but a well-mapped disagreement with three seeded theories inside it, six standing objections that function as governors, and a form (the commons) that is itself an argument. The old total system is not coming back; what may be possible is this — a structured, honest, plural, self-correcting, provisional commons of sense-making, which understands the whole not by fusing it in one mind but by holding it, argued, among many. Whether that counts as “understanding,” and whether it can ever touch the meaning-wound Nietzsche keeps pointing at, remains open — deliberately, permanently open.
