A Systems Theory for Today

A living, forkable attempt to build a systems theory adequate to the present — by designed disagreement.

THE LANDSCAPE OF CONTEMPORARY SYSTEMS THEORIES

What is actually out there now. Before we add our own candidate theories to the pile, we owe the reader — and ourselves — an honest survey of the serious attempts already in the field: what each one is, what it explains well, what it cannot reach, and where it sits relative to the thing this project is trying to build. This is the empirical backbone of our central claim. We assert that the old totalities left three gifts unreplaced — the joining of fragments, a lived shared meaning, and a form adequate to today’s pace. That claim is only worth anything if it survives contact with the best work now being done. This document is that contact.

A note on fairness (Ground Rule 16, and the C-001 caution extended). Each framework below is rendered as its strongest proponents would recognize it, then criticized. Several of these thinkers are living and working; their projects are moving. Where a school is caricatured in popular use, we describe the serious version, not the meme. Positions are summarized, never quoted at length. Where our knowledge may be dated, we say so.


How we read each framework

For each, five questions:

  1. What is it? — the core claim, in our words.
  2. Signature move — the one methodological thing it does that the others don’t.
  3. What it explains well — its genuine reach.
  4. What it can’t reach — the limit, stated without malice.
  5. Where it sits — on three axes the whole project turns on:
    • Totality-ambition: does it try to explain the whole, or a slice?
    • Register: is it predictive (risks a wrong forecast), mechanistic (names a working cause), interpretive (offers meaning/understanding), or descriptive (names a pattern without a cause)?
    • Meaning: does it address the human question of significance, or bracket it?

And one more, specific to us: relation to our candidates — which of Theory A (Adaptation Gap), B (Optimization Ecology), or C (Distributed Coherence) it feeds, rivals, or warns.


1. Cliodynamics — history as a quantitative science

What is it? Peter Turchin’s program to make history a predictive natural science: gather large longitudinal datasets on many societies and fit mathematical models to the recurring cycles of political integration and disintegration. Its flagship is structural-demographic theory — instability is driven by three coupled variables: popular immiseration (real wages and life expectancy of the non-elite falling), elite overproduction (more credentialed aspirants than the society has elite positions to absorb), and declining state fiscal health — with the “wealth pump” (a structural transfer from labor to the top) as the mechanism that drives immiseration and elite overproduction together. Recent books: Secular Cycles, Ages of Discord, End Times (2023), and The Great Holocene Transformation (2025); the empirical engine is CrisisDB, a database of societies entering and exiting crisis.

Signature move. It risks a dated, falsifiable forecast. In a 2010 Nature piece, Turchin’s models predicted the 2020s as a peak of instability in the US and Western Europe — a decade in advance, on the record. A theory that could have been shown wrong, and (in its own account) wasn’t.

What it explains well. Pressure-test #7 (populism/authoritarianism) and the resurgence of political violence, with a specific, measurable mechanism rather than a mood. It handles institutional and legitimacy decay, the “credentialed precariat,” and the historical rhyme between the 1850s, 1920s, 1970s, and 2020s. It is the single best living proof that the “new methods” hypothesis is not fantasy: a distributed, computational, data-driven program did reach where narrative history could not.

What it can’t reach. It is narrow by design — a theory of the instability cycle of complex agrarian and industrial states, not a theory of everything. It says little about meaning, fertility (except as immiseration), the dopamine economy, or the biosphere except as inputs. Critics charge that model fit to messy historical data can be over-flexible, and that “elite overproduction” risks becoming a story that explains any outcome after the fact. Turchin himself spends pages distinguishing science from conspiracy precisely because the mechanism is so narratively seductive.

Where it sits. Totality-ambition: low (a bounded science, not a metaphysics). Register: predictive + mechanistic — the strongest on this axis of anything in the field. Meaning: brackets it almost entirely.

Relation to our candidates. Directly feeds Theory A (elite overproduction + the wealth pump are a concrete instance of adaptive institutions failing to absorb a fast-changing pressure) and supplies the one falsifiable claim already sitting inside our pressure-test tracker. It is also the standing rebuke to any of our theories that get comfortable being unfalsifiable: this is the bar (Goal S2).


2. Complexity science & systems dynamics — the mathematics of the whole

What is it? Not one theory but a family: general systems theory (Bertalanffy), cybernetics (Wiener, Bateson), non-equilibrium thermodynamics and dissipative structures (Prigogine), system dynamics and the Limits to Growth tradition (Forrester, Meadows), and the Santa Fe Institute lineage of complex adaptive systems, emergence, networks, self-organized criticality, and scaling laws (Geoffrey West’s quarter-power scaling across organisms, cities, and firms). The shared claim: wholes have properties their parts don’t, arising from interaction; those properties obey findable regularities — feedback loops, phase transitions, power laws, tipping points — that recur across physics, biology, economies, and societies.

Signature move. It formalizes coupling. Where most social thought gestures at “everything is connected,” complexity science writes the connection down — as a differential equation, an agent-based model, a network, a signed feedback loop — and then runs it. Donella Meadows’s leverage points (where to intervene in a system, ranked from weak to strong) turn diagnosis into an actionable map.

What it explains well. The form of nearly every pressure-test: overshoot and delay (climate, #5), reinforcing feedback (the attention economy, #2), tipping points and hysteresis (why systems flip suddenly and don’t flip back), and why coordination fails in systems with the wrong feedback structure (#6). It is the native language of this entire project; our own candidate theories are written in it.

What it can’t reach. It is a grammar, not a sentence. Complexity science tells you how coupled systems behave in general, but is often silent on which couplings matter in a specific historical moment and what we should do about them — the step from “systems with reinforcing loops can collapse” to “here is why this civilization is fracturing now.” It can drift into hand-waving (“the edge of chaos,” “emergence”) that labels a mystery rather than solving it. And it is constitutionally mute on meaning: a scaling law has no opinion about significance.

Where it sits. Totality-ambition: medium (it aspires to cross every domain, but as method, not doctrine). Register: mechanistic, sometimes predictive (Meadows’s Limits to Growth runs have aged strikingly well; West’s scaling laws predict). Meaning: brackets it by construction.

Relation to our candidates. The toolkit for all three, and the direct ancestor of our causal-loop-diagram plan (VISUALIZATION.md D–E). Its silence on which couplings, why now is exactly the gap Theory A tries to fill; its silence on meaning is exactly the gap we deliberately do not claim to fill (the meaning-governor).


3. Social systems theory (Luhmann) — the total theory that already exists

What is it? Niklas Luhmann’s claim, worked out across decades and dozens of volumes, that modern society is not made of people but of communications, organized into functionally differentiated subsystems — law, economy, science, politics, art, religion, media — each autopoietic (self-producing, operationally closed, reproducing itself by its own binary code: legal/illegal, payment/non-payment, true/false). Society has no center, no steering mind; each subsystem observes the others only through its own code, which is why modern society cannot be governed as a whole.

Signature move. It abolishes the human subject as the unit of society and rebuilds sociology from communication and observation upward — the most rigorous, most complete, most genuinely systematic social theory produced after Heidegger. It is the standing refutation of the lazy version of this project’s founding premise (“no one has tried a total system since Heidegger”). Someone did. His name was Luhmann.

What it explains well. Coordination failure (#6) at its deepest: not a bug but a structural feature of functional differentiation — the economy literally cannot perceive an ecological limit except as a price, the legal system cannot perceive a scientific truth except as admissible evidence. This is a profound account of why the climate crisis (#5) is so intractable: no subsystem is built to register it as its problem. It also illuminates the epistemic breakdown (#3): mass media as an autopoietic system generating “reality” by its own selection logic.

What it can’t reach. It is famously cold, abstract, and (critics say) politically disarming: if society cannot be steered, what is to be done? It brackets human experience, suffering, and meaning almost as thoroughly as complexity science does — which for a theory of human society is either its rigor or its amputation, depending on where you stand (this is the structural-vs-meaning split of Round 5, in another key). And its totality is descriptive-structural; it predicts little.

Where it sits. Totality-ambition: very high (a complete theory of modern society). Register: mechanistic + descriptive; weakly predictive. Meaning: brackets it, and defends the bracketing.

Relation to our candidates. The backbone of Theory B (autopoietic optimization systems running on their own code, capturing human drives as inputs, indifferent to human ends). Luhmann is the reason Theory B says selection without a designer, not conspiracy. He is seated on our core panel precisely so this counter-example argues for itself.


4. Polycrisis — and the metacrisis — naming the target

What is it? Polycrisis — coined by Edgar Morin and Anne Brigitte Kern (1993), revived by Adam Tooze and the World Economic Forum (2022–23) — names the condition in which multiple crises (financial, pandemic, climate, energy, geopolitical, food) interact so that the whole is more dangerous than the sum: each crisis worsens the others, and no single-domain fix works. The adjacent metacrisis (Daniel Schmachtenberger, with John Vervaeke and Iain McGilchrist, from the “sensemaking” milieu) sharpens this: beneath the cascade of crises lie common generator functions — the underlying dynamics (rivalrous game-theoretic incentives, exponential technological capability without matching wisdom, a civilizational “meaning crisis”) that keep producing catastrophic risk. Vervaeke’s Awakening from the Meaning Crisis supplies the cognitive-spiritual diagnosis; McGilchrist’s divided-brain thesis supplies a neurological one.

Signature move. Polycrisis names the interaction — it is the popular concession that the crises are coupled and cannot be understood in isolation. The metacrisis goes one better and insists on a common cause beneath the couplings, which is exactly the move this project makes.

What it explains well. It is the frame for our master puzzle and pressure-test #4 (why this, why now, why all at once). It has done real work simply by making “these crises are one crisis” a sayable, fundable idea. The metacrisis version connects the outer crises (climate, coordination) to the inner one (meaning, #master-puzzle) — a link most frameworks refuse.

What it can’t reach. Its own honest champions concede the fatal gap: polycrisis describes without explaining. It is a label for the explanandum, not an explanation — a way of pointing at the interconnection, not a mechanism that generates it. (Its serious proponents say as much.) The metacrisis names candidate generators but, in its founders’ own words, offers “neither a comprehensive theory of the topic, nor an approach to addressing it.” Both risk becoming a mood — a sophisticated way of saying “everything is connected and it’s bad.”

Where it sits. Totality-ambition: high (it points at the whole). Register: descriptive (polycrisis) shading toward interpretive (metacrisis); neither predictive nor, yet, mechanistic. Meaning: polycrisis brackets it; the metacrisis centers it (its distinctive contribution).

Relation to our candidates. This is the project’s direct foil. Our entire wager is to convert the polycrisis’s description into a directed, signed mechanism — literally, to draw the arrows the buzzword leaves undrawn (see the Seven-Problems concept map, DIAGRAMS.md §4). The metacrisis’s “common generator functions” and ours (Theory A’s gap, Theory B’s optimization) are cousins; the difference we intend is falsifiability and a repo you can fork.


5. Big History — the whole story, if not the whole system

What is it? David Christian’s synthesis (with the Big History Project, and kin in Fred Spier and the “energy and complexity” tradition) narrating a single continuous story from the Big Bang to the present as a sequence of thresholds of increasing complexity — stars, chemical elements, planets, life, human culture, agriculture, the modern revolution — each crossing enabled by the right “Goldilocks conditions” and sustained by flows of energy against entropy.

Signature move. It restores the single narrative across every scale — physics to biology to human history in one arc — using energy and complexity as the connecting thread. It is the most successful contemporary attempt at the joining the old cosmologies performed, minus the metaphysics.

What it explains well. The deep-time context for why now: modernity as a sudden spike in the rate of complexity-building and energy-throughput, which reframes pressure-test #4 and #5 (climate as the shadow of the energy spike) at civilizational scale. It gives a genuine, teachable sense of the whole — its educational power is real.

What it can’t reach. It is a narrative, not a mechanism: it tells the story of increasing complexity beautifully but predicts little and offers thin guidance on what to do inside the current threshold. Critics note the “increasing complexity” throughline can smuggle in a whiff of progress-teleology, and that the frame is better at the past than at the fractured present. It brackets meaning except as wonder.

Where it sits. Totality-ambition: very high (literally everything, in time order). Register: descriptive/narrative; weakly mechanistic (energy-complexity), not predictive. Meaning: gestures at it (awe, cosmic context) without a theory of significance.

Relation to our candidates. Feeds Theory A at the largest scale — the “acceleration” our gap depends on is, in Big History’s terms, the steepening of the complexity curve. It is a model of the joining we want, and a caution about joining that stays narrative and loses grip on mechanism.


6. Metamodernism — the stance this project already stands in

What is it? A diagnosis of the post-postmodern cultural mood: after modern faith in grand narratives and postmodern incredulity toward them, culture now oscillates between the two — sincere yet ironic, hopeful yet doubtful, reaching for meaning while knowing the reach may fail. Named by Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker (2010); given a social-philosophical and developmental program by Hanzi Freinacht (the pen name of Daniel Görtz and Emil Friis) in The Listening Society and after; given a rigorous ontology by Jason Josephson Storm (Metamodernism, with his “process social ontology” and hylorealism). The shared move: totality is held provisionally — “reconstruction after deconstruction,” a proto-synthesis that is never final.

Signature move. It legitimizes provisional totality. It gives philosophical permission to build a whole while knowing it is temporary — the exact epistemic posture this project needs to justify trying at all.

What it explains well. The master puzzle as a cultural condition: the loss of shared belief is not simple nihilism but a restless oscillation, a culture that wants coherence and distrusts it simultaneously. Freinacht’s version connects individual developmental psychology to political and civilizational stages; Storm’s connects it to a defensible social ontology.

What it can’t reach. In its cultural-diagnosis form it is more sensibility than mechanism — an aesthetics and a mood, powerful at naming the structure of feeling, weak at generating testable claims. Freinacht’s developmental-stage political program (a “metamodern” politics led by the developmentally advanced) is contested and, critics warn, can slide toward a soft technocratic elitism. Storm’s is the most rigorous but is philosophy of social science, not a systems theory of the present.

Where it sits. Totality-ambition: high but explicitly provisional (its whole point). Register: interpretive; not predictive; Storm’s version reaches toward mechanistic ontology. Meaning: centers it — meaning-under-oscillation is its home question.

Relation to our candidates. The epistemic license for the whole project, and especially Theory C: “held as a living commons, provisional, plural, continuously revised” is the metamodern posture operationalized as a repository. Where metamodernism supplies the stance, we try to supply the structure.


7. Integral Theory — the most explicit “theory of everything,” and the cautionary tale

What is it? Ken Wilber’s AQAL framework (“all quadrants, all levels”): every phenomenon can be located along four irreducible dimensions — interior/exterior × individual/collective (the subjective “I,” the behavioral “it,” the cultural “we,” the systemic “its”) — crossed with developmental levels, lines, states, and types. It explicitly aims to integrate everything — science and spirituality, East and West, psychology and sociology — into one meta-map, built from “holons” (whole/parts) nested in holarchies.

Signature move. It insists that every serious framework is partly right and maps where — a meta-framework whose job is to assign every other theory its proper quadrant and level. It is the most unembarrassed contemporary attempt at literal totality.

What it explains well. As a filing system, it is genuinely useful: it catches the characteristic blindness of reductionisms (the economist who sees only the lower-right systemic quadrant; the mystic who sees only the upper-left interior) and insists that a full account needs all four. It centers meaning and interior experience, which the structural frameworks bracket.

What it can’t reach. It is widely charged with being unfalsifiable — a taxonomy so accommodating that no observation could ever contradict it, which by Turchin’s and Popper’s standard means it explains nothing in the scientific sense. Its developmental-stage claims (that individuals and cultures ascend a ladder of levels) attract serious critique for smuggling a hierarchy that flatters the theorist’s own position; its reception has at times been more movement than research program. It is a map that assigns everything a place without generating a single risky prediction.

Where it sits. Totality-ambition: maximal (explicitly everything). Register: interpretive/taxonomic; not predictive or mechanistic in a testable sense. Meaning: centers it.

Relation to our candidates. A cautionary tale for all three, and for Theory C especially. Integral is what “a framework that integrates all perspectives” becomes when it loses the discipline of falsifiability and the humility of provisionality: a comprehensive map that risks nothing and therefore settles nothing. We want its ambition to join without its immunity to being wrong. It is the ghost at our feast (see OPEN_QUESTIONS.md Q-004).


8. Also in the field (briefer)

These earn a place but not a full section; several are candidates for promotion in later sessions.

  • World-systems analysis (Wallerstein). Capitalism as a single global core–periphery system with long cycles; strong on global inequality and the wealth pump at planetary scale, weaker as a general theory of the present. Feeds Theory A/B on the economic axis.
  • Earth-system science & Gaia (Lovelock & Margulis; Rockström’s planetary boundaries; Hothouse-Earth work). The biosphere as a single self-regulating system with boundaries we are breaching; the rigorous, quantified version of pressure-test #5, generalized beyond climate to nine planetary boundaries. Feeds the “ecological overshoot” test directly.
  • Doughnut Economics (Kate Raworth). A normative systems frame: keep humanity in the safe-and-just space between a social floor and an ecological ceiling. Not an explanatory theory but a goal-shaped one; useful as a target function, relevant to Meadows-style leverage.
  • The sensemaking / “Game B” milieu (Schmachtenberger, Vervaeke, and adjacent). Overlaps the metacrisis (§4); its distinctive addition is the search for a new civilizational operating system and better collective sensemaking — a cousin of Theory C, weaker on mechanism, stronger on the meaning-and-coordination link.
  • Accelerationism and techno-optimism (as rival worldviews). Not systems theories so much as stances toward the same facts — that acceleration should be embraced or steered rather than resisted. Included because a fair landscape must hold the position that the “adaptation gap” is a feature, not a bug (a live objection to Theory A; see OPEN_QUESTIONS.md D-006).
  • Morin’s “complex thought” / La Méthode. The polycrisis’s coiner also built a full epistemology of complexity — arguably the most complete European attempt to think totality and uncertainty together after Luhmann. On the bench; a candidate for fuller treatment.

9. Synthesis — the shape of the gap

Now the payoff. We claimed the old totalities gave three things that have not been jointly replaced. Here is the field scored against those three, plus the falsifiability bar. (Scores are deliberately coarse — ✓ strong, ~ partial, ✗ absent — and are our reading, offered to be argued with, not a ranking of worth.)

What the table shows. No row has ✓ in all three of the first columns and survives the falsifiability bar. The frameworks that join rigorously (Luhmann, complexity) bracket meaning. The ones that hold meaning (metacrisis, metamodernism, integral) don’t join mechanistically and can’t be falsified. The one that is genuinely falsifiable and living (cliodynamics) is narrow and brackets meaning by design. And almost none has a form adequate to today’s pace — a living, distributed, continuously-revised structure — with the partial, telling exceptions of cliodynamics (a living data program) and metamodernism (a provisional stance, not yet a structure).

This is the niche, stated precisely. The project is not claiming the field is empty — it is rich, and we stand on its shoulders. The claim is narrower and defensible: no existing framework simultaneously (a) joins the fragments with a directed, signed mechanism, (b) does so in a form built to live and be revised at the pace of the change it describes, and (c) is honest enough to bracket the meaning-question it cannot deliver rather than faking an answer. That specific combination is the opening.

And our deliberate asymmetry. We do not claim to close the meaning column. That is the standing governor from Round 5 (the meaning-bloc’s objection, preserved). Our wager is that (a) joining and (c) form-fit-to-pace can be delivered procedurally — by Theory C’s living commons — while (b) lived meaning is a question we keep open and honest rather than one we pretend to solve. A framework that faked the meaning column would become Integral Theory: comprehensive, consoling, and unfalsifiable. We would rather be incomplete and true.

10. What this survey commits us to

  1. Website + reports both carry this. Per the author’s directive, this landscape is not an internal note — it is a public-facing chapter of the project (a site section and a report section), because situating ourselves honestly in the field is part of the argument. A theory that ignores its neighbors is not adequate to today; it is just another silo.
  2. We recruit from here. Several thinkers surveyed above are already on the panel or bench (Turchin, Luhmann, Meadows, Morin, Le Guin as the anti-control voice, the metamodern advisors); this survey is also a recruitment map for later sessions (CONTRIBUTING.md: recruit for the fault line).
  3. We are measured against here. Goal S1 (“more explanatory than the loose talk currently on offer”) now has named referents: more than polycrisis, more than the meme version of any of these. The bar is these frameworks at their best, not their worst.
