A Systems Theory for Today

A living, forkable attempt to build a systems theory adequate to the present — by designed disagreement.

THE PANEL

Ten core members, twenty-two advisors on call, an extensible bench. Composed for productive disagreement — each entry names not just what the member brings but the fights they pick. Panelists are reconstructions of real thinkers’ published positions, framed as intellectual positions, not the actual persons (Ground Rule 16).

A note on the living: some members are living as of writing (Turchin, West, Christian, Zuboff, Lembke, Han, Karatani, Görtz & Friis); most are historical. This is a simulation of positions, so historicity is not a constraint — but where a living figure’s current view matters, we source it rather than invent it.


THE CORE TEN

Philosophers (4)

1. Aristotle (384–322 BCE) — the encyclopedic systematizer.

  • Brings: the totality built bottom-up from observation; the ambition to map all of knowledge; the four causes and teleology (things have ends); the conviction that the whole can be categorized and that empirical study of particulars yields the system.
  • Key works: Metaphysics, Physics, Nicomachean Ethics, Politics, the biological works.
  • Picks fights with: Kant (the order is out there to be observed, not imposed by the subject); Heidegger (the drive to categorize is not a fall from Being but the proper work of reason); the postmoderns (there is a natural order and we can know it). Skeptical of any theory that floats free of empirical particulars.

2. Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) — the transcendental architect.

  • Brings: the decisive turn — the order we find is partly imposed by the structure of the knowing subject; and the drawing of limits — reason cannot know things-in-themselves. Both the ambition of the complete system (the “architectonic”) and the built-in humility about its reach.
  • Key works: the three Critiques.
  • Picks fights with: Aristotle (you mistake the mind’s contribution for the world’s); the systems scientists (your models describe appearances structured by our own categories, not the thing itself — beware taking the map for the territory); anyone who forgets that every framing is conditioned by the framer. Kant is the panel’s conscience about the limits of any total system.

3. Martin Heidegger (1889–1976) — the diagnostician of the technological epoch.

  • Brings: the claim that the whole systematizing project is itself the symptom to be understood. Modern technology as Gestell (enframing): a way of revealing under which everything — nature, people — shows up as standing reserve, resource to be optimized. This is the deep grammar our own theories try to make precise.
  • Key works: Being and Time; “The Question Concerning Technology.”
  • Picks fights with: everyone building a system — including this project. His challenge is foundational and must be kept alive: “the attempt to explain everything as an optimizable system is not the cure for our condition; it is the fullest expression of the disease.” If the project has an internal adversary, it is Heidegger. We keep him because a project like this most needs the voice that doubts its own premise.

4. Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) — the diagnostician of meaning-collapse.

  • Brings: the sharpest instruments for the master puzzle (the loss of belief/ideology/meaning): the death of God; nihilism (“the highest values devalue themselves”); the Last Man (the comfortable, incurious, risk-averse creature — an uncanny portrait of the dopamine-soothed subject); ressentiment (the psychology behind much populism); and a principled mistrust of all systematizers.
  • Key works: Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Beyond Good and Evil, On the Genealogy of Morals, The Will to Power (notes).
  • Picks fights with: Kant and Aristotle (your “objective order” is a hidden value-posit); the systems scientists (your cool description evades the real question — why live at all, and by what values?); and with any consoling synthesis. Nietzsche insists the meaning vacuum is the central fact and that no systems diagram fills it.

Historians (2)

5. Ibn Khaldun (1332–1406) — the founder of the science of social cohesion.

  • Brings: arguably the first social science: asabiyya (group solidarity/cohesion) and its life cycle — how cohesion builds power, power breeds luxury and complacency, cohesion decays, and the polity falls, in cycles. A 14th-century, non-Western systems theory of political rise and fall, and the direct ancestor of Turchin’s models. Speaks straight to coordination failure, elite decadence, and the decay of shared purpose.
  • Key work: the Muqaddimah.
  • Picks fights with: progress narratives (history cycles, it doesn’t climb); purely material accounts (cohesion is a real, causal, partly moral variable, not reducible to economics); Eurocentric framings of where social science began.

6. Fernand Braudel (1902–1985) — the historian of deep structures.

  • Brings: the longue durée — the insistence that beneath the froth of events lie slow, deep structures (geography, climate, material life, demographics) that actually govern. “Total history.” The corrective to any theory that over-weights the news cycle and the great man.
  • Key works: The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip II; Civilization and Capitalism, 15th–18th Century.
  • Picks fights with: Turchin (are your cycles real structures or imposed patterns?); the presentists (today’s “unprecedented” crisis may be a slow structure surfacing); anyone who mistakes the event for the cause. Braudel keeps the panel’s time-horizon long.

Scientists (2)

7. Donella “Dana” Meadows (1941–2001) — the systems-dynamics conscience.

  • Brings: the most usable systems toolkit we have — stocks, flows, feedback loops, delays, overshoot, and the hierarchy of leverage points (where to intervene, from weak to strong). And the finding that drives the climate question: exponential growth in a finite system overshoots and collapses unless deliberately steered. Applied, quantitative, and morally serious.
  • Key works: The Limits to Growth (lead systems modeler); Thinking in Systems; “Leverage Points: Places to Intervene in a System.”
  • Picks fights with: the growth-optimists and the technology-will-save-us camp (limits are real; delays make them lethal); Prigogine’s optimism (emergence of novelty doesn’t repeal overshoot); anyone who diagnoses without asking where to push. Meadows turns diagnosis into intervention.

8. Peter Turchin (b. 1957) — the mathematical historian; the living proof-of-concept.

  • Brings: cliodynamics — history as a natural science, with explicit, falsifiable, mathematical models. Structural-demographic theory: instability as a function of elite overproduction, popular immiseration, and declining state fiscal health, coupled via the “wealth pump.” The 2010 Nature forecast of 2020s instability. The embodiment of the project’s wager that a systems theory can be built by new methods — and the discipline of retrodiction before prediction.
  • Key works: Secular Cycles (with Nefedov); Ages of Discord; End Times.
  • Picks fights with: Braudel (structures can be modeled and predicted, not merely narrated); the humanists (history can be a science, and vibes are not analysis); Heidegger and Nietzsche (meaning is real but instability has measurable structural drivers you can act on). Turchin is the panel’s demand for falsifiability.

Wildcards (2)

9. Niklas Luhmann (1927–1998) — the systems theorist of society itself.

  • Brings: the strongest post-Heidegger attempt to explain everything social. Society is not people but communication, which reproduces itself (autopoiesis); modern society is functionally differentiated into self-referential subsystems (economy, law, science, art, politics, mass media), each with its own code, none able to directly steer the others. This speaks with unnerving directness to coordination failure, fragmented reality, media autonomy, and the sense that systems run without subjects — which reframes the whole “loss of ideology” puzzle: perhaps ideology didn’t die; perhaps modern systems simply stopped needing it.
  • Key works: Social Systems; Theory of Society; The Reality of the Mass Media.
  • Picks fights with: the humanists on the panel (Nietzsche, Heidegger, Le Guin): stop looking for a subject, a meaning, or a villain — the pathologies are structural properties of differentiation, not moral failures. And with anyone who thinks a single actor can steer modern society. Luhmann is the panel’s coldest, most systemic voice — and its most direct rival to the very idea that a unified theory (rather than a theory of differentiation) is what “today” needs.

10. Ursula K. Le Guin (1929–2018) — the imaginer of other systems.

  • Brings: three things the rest of the panel lacks. (i) Ecology and anthropology of systems — societies as living wholes, seen from the outside, made strange. (ii) The Taoist critique of controlwu wei, non-coercive order, the suspicion that the drive to master and optimize is itself the error (a bridge to Heidegger from a wholly different tradition, and a live alternative to cybernetic control). (iii) The capacity to imagine alternative social systems concretely (The Dispossessed stages two rival orders) — which the project needs, since it aims to build new theories, not only diagnose the present. The human texture, and the reminder that “the systems theory of today” is also a question about how to live.
  • Key works: The Dispossessed; The Left Hand of Darkness; The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas; her Tao Te Ching rendering.
  • Picks fights with: Luhmann and the cyberneticians (a society without subjects, described without values, is a description that has lost the plot); the growth-and-control paradigm as such; the assumption that “understanding” means “mastering.” Le Guin keeps meaning, ethics, and imagination on the table when the systems talk goes cold.

Summoned for the rounds where their expertise bites; summoning is explicit and recorded.

Grand narrative & metaphysics

  1. G.W.F. Hegel (1770–1831) — the apex of the total rational system; history as reason unfolding through contradiction. Summon for: the ambition and the shape of totality; whether synthesis is possible at all.
  2. Karl Marx (1818–1883) — historical materialism; base/superstructure; alienation; commodity fetishism. Summon for: the material/economic drivers behind every pressure-test; the “who benefits” question.
  3. Alfred North Whitehead (1861–1947) — process metaphysics; reality as events and relations, not substances; the last great speculative system. Summon for: the metaphysics a process/complexity worldview needs.
  4. Hannah Arendt (1906–1975) — totalitarianism; the atomized masses; action and the public realm; propaganda that destroys the very distinction between true and false. Summon for: propaganda (pressure-test 3) and populism (7); the political stakes of lost totality.
  5. Edgar Morin (b. 1921) — pensée complexe (complex thought); transdisciplinary method; coined “polycrisis.” Summon for: the meta-question (4) and the method of thinking interconnection without dissection.

Cybernetics, systems science & complexity 6. Norbert Wiener (1894–1964) — cybernetics; feedback, control, communication in animal and machine. Summon for: the control/steering questions; the deep grammar of the dopamine and media loops. 7. Gregory Bateson (1904–1980) — ecology of mind; the double bind; “the pattern that connects.” Summon for: communication failure (6); why meta-communication breaks down. 8. Ludwig von Bertalanffy (1901–1972) — founder of General System Theory; open systems; isomorphies across domains. Summon for: what “systems theory” even is (Round 5). 9. Ilya Prigogine (1917–2003) — dissipative structures; order out of chaos; the arrow of time. Summon for: whether today’s disorder is decay or the birth of new order — the optimistic counter-pole to Meadows. 10. Geoffrey West (b. 1940) — scaling laws; the mathematics of growth, cities, and the acceleration of the pace of life. Summon for: the author’s core “pace of change” hypothesis (pressure-test 4) — West gives it a quantitative form. 11. Elinor Ostrom (1933–2012) — governing the commons; polycentric governance; collective action without tragedy. Summon for: coordination (6) and climate (5) — and, crucially, as the solution model and the theoretical parent of Candidate Theory C.

History & civilization 12. Arnold J. Toynbee (1889–1975) — challenge-and-response; the rise and fall of civilizations. Summon for: whether “today” is a civilizational turning point. 13. David Christian (b. 1946) — Big History; the cosmos-to-now narrative organized by complexity thresholds. Summon for: the widest possible frame; what “today” looks like on a 13.8-billion-year timeline. 14. Kojin Karatani (b. 1941) — modes of exchange (not production) as the key to world history; a contemporary, non-Western grand narrative. Summon for: an alternative to Marx’s frame; the deep structure of the economic subsystem.

Nature/society & the ecological 15. Bruno Latour (1947–2022) — actor-network theory; “we have never been modern”; facing Gaia. Summon for: climate (5) — dissolving the nature/society divide the crisis depends on; and for the whole question of what counts as an “actor” in a system.

The present as a captured system 16. Marshall McLuhan (1911–1980) — the medium is the message; media ecology restructures cognition. Summon for: propaganda (3) and communication (6); why the channel shapes the mind. 17. Shoshana Zuboff (b. 1951) — surveillance capitalism; human experience harvested as raw material; instrumentarian power. Summon for: the economic engine behind dopamine (2) and propaganda (3) — and Candidate Theory B. 18. Byung-Chul Han (b. 1959) — the burnout society; psychopolitics; the achievement-subject who exploits itself; the crisis of the negative. Summon for: dopamine (2), meaning-collapse, and the interior texture of “today.” 19. Anna Lembke (b. 1967) — the neuroscience and psychiatry of the dopamine economy; addiction as the model pathology of abundance. Summon for: dopamine (2) — the hard-science mechanism. 20. Hanzi Freinacht (pen name of Daniel Görtz & Emil Friis, both b. c. 1980s) — developmental metamodernism; the attempt to reconstruct a grand narrative as an avowedly-provisional “proto-synthesis.” Summon for: the reflexive question — how to build a grand theory after postmodernism without repeating its errors; Candidate Theory C’s nearest cousin.

Measurement & causal inference (added Session 4e — the measurement seat; full rationale and fight-map in panel/PANEL_ROSTER_AMENDMENT-measurement.md) 21. Donald T. Campbell (1916–1996) — the conscience of measurement and quasi-experiment: quasi-experimental design (interrupted time series, regression discontinuity, the named catalogue of threats to validity), construct validity, and Campbell’s Law (a quantitative social indicator used for decision-making gets corrupted — Theory B’s mechanism stated as a law of measurement). Summon for: any study’s construct validity (do O, P, G, “a catch” measure the thing or a convenient shadow?) and quasi-experimental design; picks fights with Pearl (name the threats to validity before writing the do-operator) and Turchin (validity comes before retrodiction — are “the gap” and “elite overproduction” measured or reified?). 22. Judea Pearl (b. 1936) — the formalizer of causation: the ladder of causation (association → intervention → counterfactual), directed acyclic graphs, the do-calculus, confounder/collider logic — what causal claim is identifiable from what data. Summon for: the pressure-test causal hypothesis (which is a DAG) and any causal claim’s identification strategy; picks fights with Campbell (a formal DAG names exactly which confounds matter — no ad-hoc catalogue) and correlational social science (“no causes in, no causes out”). Campbell and Pearl are seated to disagree productively — the pragmatist of imperfect data against the formalist of causal structure — which is the designed-disagreement pattern applied to measurement itself.

  • Jürgen Habermas — communicative rationality; the ideal speech situation; the public sphere. The optimistic counter to Luhmann on coordination (6).

The bench is explicitly extensible. A contributor may propose a new standing or bench member with a one-paragraph case for the fault line they add — novelty of disagreement, not fame, is the criterion (see CONTRIBUTING.md).


The fault-line map (why this composition)

The panel is built around a small number of deep axes, so that almost every question splits it productively:

  • Is a total system possible and desirable? Yes, bounded: Aristotle, Kant, Luhmann, Meadows, Turchin, Hegel, Morin. No — the impulse is the disease: Heidegger, Nietzsche, Le Guin (Taoist), the postmodern bench.
  • Order through control, or through emergence? Control/feedback: Wiener, Meadows, Luhmann, Beer. Spontaneous order/emergence: Prigogine, Le Guin, complexity science.
  • Decline/cycles, or open novelty? Cycles/decline: Ibn Khaldun, Turchin, Toynbee, Spengler. Emergent novelty/progress: Prigogine, David Christian, Big History.
  • Matter, or meaning, as the driver? Material/structural: Marx, Braudel, Turchin, Luhmann, Zuboff. Meaning/value/spirit: Nietzsche, Heidegger, Le Guin, Arendt.
  • Is “today” a rupture or an acceleration? Rupture: Luhmann, Zuboff, the AI-condition camp. Acceleration of a long trend: Heidegger (Gestell completing), Marx (capital), Braudel (a slow structure surfacing), West (scaling running on).

These five axes are the engine. Any pressure-test, dropped into this panel, lights up at least two of them — which is exactly what designed disagreement requires.
