Behind the exchange there is a lane of narrow doors; behind the third she has kept one ledger thirty years. Reconciliation, the retail of it: what went out, what came in, initialed monthly, queried never.
The order is old and small and daily. Reference: FARE. It goes out every day the exchange is open; the amount moves with a number nobody reports to her. She counts a week of it against the harbor bell. One for one: whatever crosses the water, the account pays on the crossing. The holder’s field is filled in, and the name in it is one word short.
The order’s opening date stands earlier than the house’s founding. She has the founding minutes up from the strongroom, continuous, page into page, and the thread that sews them is newer than the paper. She copies the ledger’s date into her notes.
She totals it from the first day, thirty years of columns behind her, a right shoulder higher than the left and an eye that waters in the afternoons, and she works through both the way you work through weather. The total has more digits than the form allows. She uses two forms, stapled, and raises the demand the house provides for exactly this, repayment in full by the holder of record. She lodges it before lunch, with her initials in the corner, and the house issues the demand a reference of its own, which is how a house knows who asked.
For a week the fare goes out as usual. She sleeps badly and counts nothing. On the fourth night she wakes with her jaw locked and has to open it with her hand.
Overnight, her debts settle, in the order she would have settled them in. The rent. The installments on her mother’s room. The boiler loan, four years left, closed. Each entry carries the reference she knows. In her drawer, on the house’s paper, a receipt for the exact figure of her demand: Received with thanks. She keeps it in the drawer with the ribbon spools, face down, under the one that is nearly out and will not be replaced. The payer’s name is hers, in full. It is not one word short.
In the morning the order shows a new funding line she did not add, carrying the reference the house issued to her demand, and beside it, in the column she has kept for thirty years, her own hand has already entered it. The first debit is small, the size of a fare. She does not cancel it. The crossings continue.
