STATEMENTS OF RESIDENTS, TAKEN AFTER

Taken between 04:20 and 05:10, on the landings, in the order the doors opened.

One. There was a candle on the third landing and more people than the landing holds. Somebody’s arm was against mine the whole hour and I did not move it, and I could not tell you now whose it was. If there was talking, it was quiet enough to be weather.

Two. Nobody spoke. I was listening the whole hour. I was also cold, and I did not get up for the blanket, and that is the part I keep.

Three. My neighbor sang, or the pipes did. Nine years in this building and I cannot swear which.

Five. I said things I had wanted to say for years. I checked after: nothing is written anywhere. I withdraw my statement.

Six. I have lived here nine years and did not know how many of us there are. I know now, and I could not tell you the number. The door held itself open the whole hour, which I have not forgiven, and the dark on the stairs was warmer than the light usually is. Ask the others what was said. I was there for the dark.

Seven. I do not read. The voice reads. For one hour I sat with the boxes in my lap and did not know which was which, and I did not want anybody on the stairs to see me holding them, and it was the longest hour of my year. I have no complaint. I would like to know when the next one is.
