One day

The novel unfolds across 16 June 1904. Its eighteen episodes turn ordinary movement, conversation, appetite, work, memory, and return into a day-long structure.

One city

Dublin is more than a backdrop. Streets, clocks, institutions, prices, housing, politics, and public rituals shape what characters can notice and do.

Changing prose
