Stephen Dedalus is bodily present. Nearby women, a couple, and a live dog are perceived through him. Aunt Sara's household, Kevin Egan, Patrice, May Dedalus, Cranly, and others enter as memory, hypothesis, dream, quotation, or fantasy.

Where does the episode move?

Along the Sandymount shore, relatively northeast toward the Pigeonhouse before unstable wet ground makes Stephen turn and sit near rock and boulder terrain. The literary sequence is firmer than an exact map.

When is Stephen walking?

Late morning on 16 June 1904. Joyce's schema assigns 11:00, a structural coordinate rather than a narrated stopwatch reading.

What actually happens?

Stephen walks, tests sight and sound with closed eyes, sees strangers, considers but does not make a family visit, remembers Paris, turns from sinking ground, watches a live dog encounter a dead dog, writes, rests, watches advancing water, and turns toward a ship.

Why read through body and state?

Because Stephen's learned, grieving, desiring language repeatedly outruns what the present scene can establish, while feet, surfaces, sound, posture, thirst, teeth, and water repeatedly test or redirect it.

Proteus becomes navigable when each associative surge is held beside a bodily fact and a consciousness state. Stephen's feet count, slow, sink, turn, climb, and rest; present perception becomes memory, quotation, hypothesis, dream, or projection; ground, sound, paper, rock, water, teeth, and the final turn bring the strand back.

Shut eyes, sounding boots

Stephen closes his eyes while walking, counts successive steps, hears his boots crush shore material, probes with the ashplant, fears a fall, and opens his eyes.

Two women, birth cords

Stephen sees two women descend. A bag he cannot see inside triggers imagined miscarriage, birth cords, parents, creation, theology, and heresy before wind, waves, and a practical obligation return.

The road not taken to Aunt Sara

Stephen considers a family visit, mentally stages it, continues walking, notices changed ground, admits he has passed the way, and turns northeast toward the Pigeonhouse.

Paris returns as Kevin Egan

French voices open a Paris memory of Kevin Egan and Patrice, student self-fashioning, hunger, the telegram about Stephen's mother, printing work, Irish political stories, and abandonment.

Turn back: live dog, dead dog, drowned man

Stephen's feet sink and he turns. He watches a live dog and a couple, imagines whether he could rescue a drowning person, remembers his mother through failure, sees the live dog nose a dead dog, recalls a dream, and projects classed and sexualized stories onto the couple.

Write, desire, lie back

Stephen tears a blank strip from Deasy's letter, writes on the rock, imagines being read, revoices Berkeley on distance, invents an intimate woman reader, admits loneliness, lies back, and returns to borrowed boots and remembered touch.

Rising water, corpse, silent ship

Stephen watches water cover sand and weeds, voices its sounds, imagines recovery and transformation of a drowned body, notices thirst, teeth, money, and pockets, turns, and sees a three-master moving upstream.

Stephen's feet count, slow, sink, turn, climb, and rest; present perception becomes memory, quotation, hypothesis, dream, or projection; ground, sound, paper, rock, water, teeth, and the final turn bring the strand back.

Counter-reading: The body does not necessarily stabilize Stephen. Boots, posture, appetite, and even the final ship can be converted into language as quickly as books and memories are. The seven movements are therefore a reading path, not a cure for the episode's excess.
