Seven tower-to-road movements: performance, possession, and the pressure to leave

At a Martello tower above Sandycove, Stephen Dedalus moves through Buck Mulligan's performance, Haines's uneasy presence, grief for his mother, breakfast debts, arguments about language and power, and a final handover of the key. This guide follows seven movements without treating departure as freedom already won.

Evidence appears on two separate axes: TEXT, HIST, or INTERP names the claim lane; SCHEMA, TEXT ANCHOR, RECON, WINDOW, or OPEN names basis, precision, or state.

Orientation

At a Martello tower above Sandycove, Stephen Dedalus moves through Buck Mulligan's performance, Haines's uneasy presence, grief for his mother, breakfast debts, arguments about language and power, and a final handover of the key. This guide follows seven movements without treating departure as freedom already won.

Who holds the morning's attention?

Stephen is the main focal pressure, but he does not control the room. Mulligan performs, commands, jokes, feeds, borrows, and asks for the key. Haines watches, questions, says that he intends to make a collection, and unsettles. The milkwoman works and waits for payment. May Dedalus remains absent yet ethically present through Stephen's grief and Mulligan's report.

Where does the episode move?

The represented action begins on the roof of the Sandycove Martello tower, descends to its living room, passes through the locked door and down the path, and ends near the bathing cove as Stephen walks away. The movement is literary orientation, not a present-day route or access guide.

When does this morning occur?

Mulligan says that he told the milkwoman to come after eight; that is represented speech, not a clock reading. Joyce's Linati schema supplies an eight-to-nine morning convention. This project uses approximately 08:00 to 08:45 only as a broad reconstruction, leaving the episode's internal minutes open.

What changes before Stephen leaves?

The roof's mock ceremony gives way to fear, grief, breakfast, debt, political and religious argument, and talk of a drowned man. Material control narrows: Stephen carries the bowl, locks the door, then gives Mulligan the key and two pennies. He agrees to a later meeting but walks toward a day he cannot yet place.

How should a first reader follow the pressure?

Watch who performs, who reports, who pays, who carries, and who possesses. Ritual language, a mirror, milk, money, the locked door, the drowned body, and the key repeatedly join large arguments to small acts. Homer and Hamlet can sharpen the reading, but neither is a code that settles the episode.

Performance keeps becoming material

Telemachus repeatedly turns display into consequence. Mulligan's mock liturgy entertains while giving him the morning's public voice. His teasing can coexist with food, attention, apology, and pressure. Haines can sound courteous while Mulligan's reports about his money and Oxford connection, Haines's own collecting proposal and British self-identification, and his antisemitic speech place him differently from Stephen. Stephen's grief is real, but his charged final judgment does not become the guide's verdict. Bowl, mirror, milk, coins, door, drowned body, and key keep asking who bears a cost when talk changes the terms of belonging. A counter-reading: The seven-movement sequence may over-organize a chapter whose energy also lies in rhythm, comic improvisation, sudden memory, sensory association, and unfinished thought. Mulligan is not only a usurper, Haines is not only an extractor, the milkwoman is not only an emblem, and leaving is not a completed liberation. Read the structure as one route through the morning, not its hidden solution.

Roof ritual and performance

Mulligan emerges with a shaving bowl, mirror, and razor, borrows the language and gestures of Catholic ritual, calls Stephen up, and turns the roof into a stage. Stephen watches rather than matching the performance. The surviving Sandycove tower is documented as part of a British coastal-defence system commissioned in 1804. The opening therefore joins an ordinary shave, sacred parody, and military architecture without making any one of them the master code.

Haines, gun, sea, and mother

Stephen reports that Haines raved in the night about a black panther, asks about the guncase, and says he was frightened. Mulligan does not reconstruct the firearm's state; he redirects attention toward the sea and Stephen's mother. He reports that May asked Stephen to kneel and pray and condemns Stephen's refusal. Fear, rescue talk, the maternal sea, and bereavement now occupy the same view, but they remain different kinds of pressure.

Mirror, grief, and offence

Mulligan displays a cracked servant's mirror; Stephen calls it a symbol of Irish art. Stephen then recounts hearing Mulligan describe May as beastly dead. Mulligan offers a medicalized defence and says that he did not mean to offend her memory. Stephen answers that the offence was to him. The scene lets wit, diagnosis, national symbol, apology, and wounded friendship touch without allowing any one language to settle the grief.

Song, dream, and descent

Left briefly on the roof, Stephen remembers May through a distressing dream image and refuses the appeal he hears in it. Mulligan's song rises from below and calls him back to breakfast. Mulligan says that Haines is apologising for waking them; Stephen answers and descends carrying the shaving bowl. Private grief, public song, reported apology, bodily movement, and remembered service fold together without becoming one psychological explanation.

Breakfast, language, labour, and bill

The three men eat while the milkwoman arrives with her measured delivery. Mulligan says he told her to come after eight. Haines speaks in words that Mulligan identifies, and the milkwoman recognizes by sound, as Irish; she says she is ashamed that she does not speak the language. She presents an exact bill, receives less than the amount due, and accepts that they will owe two pennies. Her labour, waiting, speech, and partial payment come before the symbolic roles the men and narration place on her.

Tower, institutions, prejudice, and the drowned body

Stephen locks the tower and carries the key. The men identify rent to the Secretary of State for War and discuss the tower's military history, Hamlet, belief, British rule, and the Catholic Church. Haines acknowledges unequal treatment of Ireland yet also voices an antisemitic national fear. At the cliff edge, a boatman watches the tide for a man drowned nine days before. Argument about institutions returns abruptly to a body the sea has not returned.

Cove, key, coins, and departure

At the cove, Mulligan prepares to swim. Stephen gives him the tower key and two pennies for a drink. Haines says that they will see Stephen again; Mulligan calls after him with the Ship at half twelve, and Stephen agrees. As he climbs away, Stephen thinks that he will not sleep at the tower that night and cannot go home. His final word charges Mulligan as a usurper, but the companion records that judgment as Stephen's thought, not its own verdict.

02 · INTERP · review

Why the arrangement matters

The episode repeatedly places ritual speech, jokes, report, memory, food, payment, the tower key, and departure in one morning sequence.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: The sequence is textual; the pressure relation among its elements remains interpretive.

Performance, possession, and allegiance form a useful but incomplete way to read the changing relations.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence sourceSRC-E01-04Telemachus annotated chapter, context source

Limit: The model must remain open to comic, formal, sensory, theological, political, and grief-centred alternatives.

Performance keeps becoming material

Counter-reading: The seven-movement sequence may over-organize a chapter whose energy also lies in rhythm, comic improvisation, sudden memory, sensory association, and unfinished thought. Mulligan is not only a usurper, Haines is not only an extractor, the milkwoman is not only an emblem, and leaving is not a completed liberation. Read the structure as one route through the morning, not its hidden solution.

03 · Episode-native structure

Seven tower-to-road movements

Follow what is said, handled, owed, remembered, and handed over. Each movement separates represented action from historical context and project interpretation. The sequence is an editorial aid, not a set of hidden chapter divisions.

    Roof ritual and performance

    Place
    Martello tower roof, Sandycove
    Time
Opening morning; the Linati schema gives an 8–9 a.m. orientation, not a represented start time

Mulligan carries the shaving things to the roof and performs a mock liturgical opening while Stephen watches.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: The ritual echo is represented performance rather than an actual Mass.

The surviving Sandycove structure is Martello Tower No. 11, commissioned in 1804 within a British coastal-defence system.

Claim laneHISTRECONSourcesSRC-E01-03The Martello Tower: The Tower, the Sea and a Beginning, context source

Limit: Building history contextualizes the setting; it does not prove Joyce's intention for every local detail.

The roof performance begins a recurring pressure between public voice and Stephen's guarded response.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence sourceSRC-E01-04Telemachus annotated chapter, context source

Limit: Stephen's silence is not a transparent statement of motive.

Caution: The liturgical witness confirms a pre-1904 preparatory formula; it does not make Mulligan a priest or the entire episode a Mass.

  2. 02TEL-02

    Haines, gun, sea, and mother

    Place
    Tower roof and seaward parapet
    Time
    Early roof conversation

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: The episode represents Stephen's report and fear, not a complete account of the gun or Haines's night.

Mulligan reports that May Dedalus asked Stephen to kneel and pray before her death.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: The request is Mulligan's reported speech; Stephen's later represented memory does not independently narrate it.

The episode places fear and grief beside Mulligan's confidence without making courage or irreligion a single moral scale.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: No clinical diagnosis or settled account of belief is inferred.

Caution: The guide does not claim that the gun is loaded, aimed, or fired, and it does not turn May into evidence in a contest between men.

  3. 03TEL-03

    Mirror, grief, and offence

    Place

    Time
    Later roof exchange

Stephen names the cracked lookingglass a symbol of Irish art and tells Mulligan which earlier words hurt him.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: The symbol is Stephen's textual formulation, not an uncontested project claim about Irish art.

The exchange shows apology and renewed injury coexisting rather than completing reconciliation.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: The guide does not infer either man's complete intention from this exchange.

Caution: Mulligan's character speech is not medical evidence, and Stephen's symbol remains a charged reading inside the novel.

  4. 04TEL-04

    Song, dream, and descent

    Place
Tower roof, stair, and living room
    Time
    Transition from roof to breakfast

Stephen's represented memory moves through a distressing dream of May; Mulligan calls him down, reports Haines's apology, and Stephen carries the bowl inside.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: Dream image, memory, report, and observed action remain distinct.

The descent transfers pressure from inward grief to shared domestic action without ending either.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: Spatial descent is not a diagnostic or theological solution.

Caution: The guide names bereavement imagery without reproducing it at length or making May a symbol only.

  5. 05TEL-05

    Breakfast, language, labour, and bill

    Place
    Tower living room
    Time
    Breakfast after the roof sequence

The milkwoman delivers milk, discusses Irish, states her bill, receives a florin, and leaves two pennies unpaid.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: The bill is a represented transaction, not a general price or wage series.

Beginning with labour and payment resists turning the milkwoman into a national allegory before treating her as a working person.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence sourceSRC-E01-04Telemachus annotated chapter, context source

Limit: The episode does not supply her private biography, motives, or full economic circumstances.

Caution: The guide attributes symbolic pressure to Stephen-centred narration and the men's talk; it does not claim that the woman represents Ireland.

  6. 06TEL-06

Tower, institutions, prejudice, and the drowned body

    Place
    Tower exterior and cliff path
    Time
Walk from the tower toward the bathing cove

The men discuss the tower, Hamlet, imperial and church power, and British identity; Haines makes an antisemitic statement; a boatman watches for a drowned man's body.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: Character speech is attributed and does not become historical fact or project language.

The Sandycove tower's documented military history places the represented conversation within a surviving British defensive structure.

Claim laneHISTRECONSourcesSRC-E01-03The Martello Tower: The Tower, the Sea and a Beginning, context source

Limit: The building record does not validate every historical statement spoken by characters.

The sequence makes political, religious, and literary abstractions answer to bodily vulnerability without resolving them.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence sourceSRC-E01-04Telemachus annotated chapter, context source

Limit: The drowned man is not reduced to a symbol or made equivalent to Stephen's grief.

Caution: The guide paraphrases prejudice, gives no recovery or route-safety advice, and does not make fiction a demographic sample.

  7. 07TEL-07

    Cove, key, coins, and departure

    Place
    Bathing cove and upward-curving path
    Time
Episode close; project window approaches approximately 08:45

Stephen hands Mulligan the key and two pennies, agrees to a half-twelve meeting at the Ship, walks away, and thinks that he will not sleep at the tower that night and cannot go home.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: Agreement to meet is not proof that the later meeting occurs.

The key handover makes dispossession material, while the Homeric and Hamlet lenses keep departure and usurpation open rather than solved.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence sourceSRC-E01-06Homer, Odyssey, Book 1, translated by A. T. Murray, context sourceSRC-E01-08Hamlet: Entire Play, context source

Limit: Mulligan is not equated one-to-one with Antinous or Claudius, and Stephen's thought is not companion judgment.

Caution: Approximately 08:45 is a working endpoint only; departure does not establish safe lodging, financial independence, or resolved allegiance.

Read sideways

Possession and allegiance pressures

TEL-R-01

The tower is shelter, stage, and contested possession

The men eat in the tower; Stephen locks its door, carries the key, and later gives the key to Mulligan.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: The episode records use and transfer of the key, not legal title or an eviction.

Shelter, performance, military history, and the key make possession a recurring pressure.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence sourceSRC-E01-03The Martello Tower: The Tower, the Sea and a Beginning, context source

Limit: The relation is one bounded reading, not an exhaustive colonial allegory.

Caution: The key is a material action and an interpretive pressure; it is not proof of legal ownership or one exhaustive colonial allegory.

TEL-R-02

Ritual language distributes authority

The episode stages mock liturgy, reports May's request for prayer, includes Mulligan's song, and turns to theological and institutional argument.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: These represented uses of religious language do not establish any character's complete belief.

Religious and other formal languages lend speakers temporary authority while also carrying memory and injury.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence sourceSRC-E01-07Missale Romanum, 1889, context source

Limit: Resemblance to liturgical form does not make the whole episode a solved ritual code.

Caution: Religious conflict is not reduced to belief versus disbelief, and liturgical resemblance does not prove a total structural key.

TEL-R-03

Care and command remain entangled

Mulligan provides breakfast, calls Stephen down, reports Haines's apology, asks for money and the key, and repeatedly mocks or presses him.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: The listed acts remain distinct; the guide does not infer a single hidden motive.

Care and command remain entangled across Stephen and Mulligan's changing friendship.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: Practical care does not erase injury, and injury does not make every gesture empty.

Caution: The relation resists diagnosing either man or forcing a single moral verdict on a changing friendship.

TEL-R-04

Money and collection convert speech into value

The episode names travel money, wages, the milk bill, rent, Haines's wish to collect sayings, and two pennies for a drink.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: These are represented exchanges and proposals, not a complete economic history.

Money and collection repeatedly expose unequal access to labour, shelter, culture, and publication.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: Haines's advantage remains bounded to Mulligan's reports about money and an Oxford connection, Haines's represented collecting proposal, and the access implied by those statements.

Caution: The relation does not infer hidden payments, equate all exchanges, or turn fictional prices into a general economic series.

TEL-R-05

The sea carries rescue, mother, threat, and loss

Characters speak of the sea, rescue, Stephen's mother, a drowned man, swimming, and the water visible at departure.

Claim laneTEXTTEXT_ANCHORSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: The drowned-man and tide report does not verify identity, tide conditions, route, or recovery.

The sea carries bodily and symbolic pressures that remain deliberately unstable.

Claim laneINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence source

Limit: May, the drowned man, Stephen, and the sea are not interchangeable symbols.

Caution: The relation does not make the drowned man, May Dedalus, Stephen, or the sea interchangeable symbols.

Module limit: The seven movements and five relationship pressures are project-authored public scaffolding. They are not Joyce's headings, universal edition divisions, exact timetable, complete object inventory, or solved Homeric, Shakespearean, national, religious, biographical, or psychological code.

04 · People and presence

Who is here—and in what sense?

Presence, memory, report, imagination, and narrative focus are kept apart.

TEL-LENS-STEPHEN

Stephen Dedalus · focal pressure without neutral authority

Stephen is sleepy, frightened, grieving, financially strained, intellectually alert, resistant, and dependent. His perceptions organize much of the episode, but his associations and final accusation remain situated acts rather than transparent verdicts.

Caution: The lens does not diagnose grief, guilt, belief, depression, or personality.

TEL-LENS-MULLIGAN

Buck Mulligan · care, mockery, command, and uneven apology

Mulligan supplies food, energy, performance, names, and social plans while pressing Stephen's grief, borrowing his things, seeking his wages, and receiving the key after asking for it. His apology and care matter without cancelling his injuries.

Caution: Neither Stephen's final thought nor a Homeric or Hamlet parallel fixes Mulligan as one stable type.

TEL-LENS-HAINES

Haines · curiosity, courtesy, advantage, and prejudice

Haines listens, speaks in words that Mulligan identifies, and the milkwoman recognizes by sound, as Irish, proposes a collection, asks questions, encourages payment, and sometimes sounds conciliatory. Mulligan reports Haines's money and Oxford connection; Stephen reports the nighttime disturbance. Haines's British self-identification, cultural access, and antisemitic speech keep his position structurally unequal and ethically unsettled.

Caution: Curiosity, courtesy, extraction, and prejudice remain simultaneous possibilities; no private motive or national essence is inferred.

TEL-LENS-MAY

May Dedalus · a person beyond the men's conflict

May enters through Mulligan's report, Stephen's recollection, dream, sensory memory, guilt, resistance, and grief. Her death shapes the morning, but her personhood exceeds the argument about Stephen's refusal and the men's competing languages.

Caution: The guide does not invent her private consciousness, reduce her to a ghostly device, or use her to decide the men's moral contest.

TEL-LENS-MILKWOMAN

The milkwoman · work, speech, waiting, and partial payment

She carries and measures milk, speaks about the morning and Irish, calculates what is owed, receives less than the bill, and leaves. The men's speech and Stephen-centred narration load her with symbolic meanings that should not displace her represented labour.

05 · Reading threads

Questions that open the episode

Each thread states what it notices, why that matters, and what would make the reading too neat.

  1. Thread 01

    Performance can become authority

Question: When does a joke, ritual, song, or imitation begin to organize the room?

In the episode: Mulligan repeatedly converts voice, gesture, borrowed forms, and quick changes of register into social momentum.

Why it matters: The episode makes style consequential without claiming that performance is always deception or that Stephen's reserve is neutral.

Counter-reading: Performance also creates pleasure, food, companionship, and improvisational life; not every theatrical act is domination.

EvidenceINTERPTEXT_ANCHORRECONOPENSourcesSRC-E01-01Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300, evidence sourceSRC-E01-07Missale Romanum, 1889, context source

  2. Thread 02

Grief is spoken through unequal reports

Question: Who gets to name May's death, Stephen's refusal, and the injury that remains?

In the episode: Mulligan reports May's request and defends his own words; Stephen supplies memory, dream, resistance, and the claim that the offence was to him.

Why it matters: Attribution prevents one man's account from replacing May or converting bereavement into a solved moral test.

Counter-reading: Care, guilt, religious conflict, resentment, memory, and wounded friendship can coexist without equal authority.

  3. Thread 03

    Objects make dependence visible

Question: What changes when bowl, mirror, food, money, door, and key pass between hands?

In the episode: Small acts of carrying, borrowing, paying, locking, and handing over give material form to a relationship otherwise full of jokes and abstractions.

Why it matters: Possession clarifies pressure without requiring every object to become a symbol with one meaning.

Counter-reading: Shared use and casual exchange can also mark ordinary cohabitation rather than a deliberate seizure.

  4. Thread 04

    Who may collect a language?

Question: What happens when Irish speech, folklore, sayings, and publication access meet at breakfast?

In the episode: Haines speaks in words that Mulligan identifies, and the milkwoman recognizes by sound, as Irish, and he says that he intends to collect Stephen's sayings; she says she is ashamed that she does not speak Irish; Mulligan turns collection itself into a joke.

Why it matters: Language appears as lived ability, shame, performance, scholarship, marketable material, and unequal access.

Counter-reading: An English collector's interest is not automatically theft, and linguistic loss is not attributable to one breakfast guest.

  5. Thread 05

    Institutions speak through the morning

Question: How do church, empire, nation, university, medicine, and literary authority enter a domestic scene?

In the episode: Ritual parody, tower rent, British identity, Catholic memory, medical speech, Mulligan's report of an Oxford connection, and national language repeatedly colour personal exchanges.

Why it matters: The episode connects intimate pressure to structures without making any character a complete representative of an institution.

Counter-reading: Institutional context should not erase humour, temperament, bodily action, or the specificity of a single friendship.

  6. Thread 06

The sea does not hold one meaning

Question: How can the same water carry beauty, mother-language, rescue, fear, swimming, and an unrecovered body?

In the episode: The sea moves among Mulligan's rhetoric, Stephen's grief, remembered rescue, the drowned-man watch, bathing, and the final look back.

Why it matters: Material water keeps interrupting symbolic certainty and returns interpretation to bodily risk.

Counter-reading: A recurring sea image need not bind every maternal, mortal, Homeric, or political association into one system.

  7. Thread 07

    Departure is not liberation completed

Question: What does Stephen gain when he gives up the key and walks away?

In the episode: He leaves the tower, thinks that he will not sleep there that night and cannot go home, and agrees to a later meeting.

Why it matters: The ending preserves agency, dependence, uncertainty, and unfinished attachment in one movement.

Counter-reading: Homeric and Hamlet echoes can illuminate dispossession and departure, but Stephen's charged final word does not prove a complete role map.

Ulysses, Project Gutenberg eBook 4300

Authority: Project Gutenberg

Use: Searchable primary-text witness for Part I [1], checked from the opening through the transition to Part I [2]. This is the E01 alias of the repository-global witness SRC0007. TEL-01 through TEL-07 bind to seven exact, non-overlapping witness windows and unique opening/closing fingerprints in docs/audits/r017-e01-telemachus-source-anchor-matrix.json. The witness supports represented event order, attribution, setting, objects, the after-eight report, the milkwoman's transaction, the institutional conversation, the drowned-man watch, the key and coin handover, the proposed half-twelve meeting, and Stephen's closing thoughts.

Rights: Project Gutenberg identifies the ebook as public domain in the United States; readers elsewhere must check their jurisdiction. This companion publishes paraphrase and only tiny identifying phrases.

Caution: Not a 1922 facsimile, critical edition, universal lineation, sole textual authority, or proof that character speech supplies documentary history.

Context and bibliography

These sources orient the reader; a zero join is explicit and does not masquerade as claim evidence.

Ulysses first edition bibliographic record

Authority: National Library of Ireland

Use: Bibliographic orientation to the 1922 Shakespeare and Company first edition.

Rights: Bibliographic link only; no scan, catalogue media, or record text is reproduced.

Caution: A catalogue record does not verify this page's sequence, working time window, movement labels, source joins, or interpretations.

Context/bibliographic orientation only; no claim support asserted.

The Martello Tower: The Tower, the Sea and a Beginning

Authority: James Joyce Tower and Museum

Use: Historical context from the page sections on the tower's construction, literary connection, and museum history: Sandycove Martello Tower No. 11's 1804 commission within British coastal defence, later private tenancy, Oliver St John Gogarty's 1904 tenancy, and eventual museum use.

Rights: Linked institutional page. No page text, photograph, collection image, map, or other media is reproduced.

Caution: Museum history contextualizes the surviving building; it does not verify fictional action, authorial intention, exact 1904 interiors, current access, route safety, or accessibility.

Telemachus annotated chapter

Authority: The Joyce Project

Use: Bounded secondary context from the line-by-line notes attached to the opening 'Introibo ad altare Dei,' the black-panther report, the cracked servant's mirror, 'beastly dead,' the Irish-language and milkwoman exchange, Haines's proposed collection of sayings, the man drowned nine days before, and the closing 'Usurper.' Every represented event and attribution was checked independently against SRC-E01-01; these notes are used to identify questions and test whether the first-reader frame overstates one interpretation.

Rights: Linked secondary resource. No annotation, page design, image, or extended text is reproduced.

Caution: A rich but non-exclusive secondary account; it is not a critical edition, owner acceptance, or authority for treating every allusion as intentional or settled.

Schemas for Ulysses

Authority: The Joyce Project

Use: Context from the Linati schema's Telemachus row for Joyce's explanatory schemas, including the eight-to-nine morning convention. The schema evidence is kept separate from represented textual time and the project's narrower working window.

Rights: Linked secondary presentation of documented schema material. No manuscript image, table, or extended text is reproduced.

Caution: Schemas are orientation aids rather than infallible master keys, exact internal clocks, or proof of a single Homeric structure.

Homer, Odyssey, Book 1, translated by A. T. Murray

Authority: Theoi Classical Texts Library; translation first published 1919

Use: Primary comparative context at Odyssey 1.96–421 for Telemachus in a household under pressure, Athena's intervention, Penelope, and the suitors.

Rights: Linked classical text. This release paraphrases only and does not republish a substantial translation.

Caution: Supports a bounded comparative lens, not one-to-one assignment of Stephen, Mulligan, Haines, May, the milkwoman, or the tower.

Missale Romanum, 1889

Authority: Catholic Church; Desclée, Lefebvre et Soc.; Harold B. Lee Library scan

Use: Pre-1904 witness to the Roman Missal's preparatory altar dialogue at printed page 248 in the retained scan locator, used to contextualize Mulligan's opening liturgical imitation.

Rights: Linked 1889 scan only. No scan image, typography, music, or extended liturgical text is reproduced.

Caution: This is an 1889 Desclée, Lefebvre et Soc. edition, not the 1570 first typical edition. The archive notes missing pages elsewhere in its copy; the witness does not make the episode a complete liturgical structure.

Hamlet: Entire Play

Authority: Folger Shakespeare Library

Use: Primary comparative context at Hamlet 1.2, 1.5, 2.2, and 3.2 for a mourning son, a dead father, a displaced inheritance, contested succession, performance, and uncertainty. These bounded locators frame the Hamlet lens invoked by the episode's characters and Stephen's later argument.

Rights: Linked digital edition. No Folger page design, apparatus, or extended play text is reproduced.

Caution: The comparison remains INTERP. It does not make Stephen Hamlet, Mulligan Claudius, May a substitute for Hamlet's father, or every tower action a Shakespearean correspondence.

07 · Status and limits

What this build can honestly claim

R-017 authorized the protected reconstruction, review, and two-stage release of this freshly derived source. It passed its source-anchor, attribution, rights, contract, narration, structured editorial-simulation, protected artifact, and live-delivery checks. R-019 records the owner's acceptance of this exact v0.1 guide while preserving its review lifecycle and visible limits.

Editorial state

Verified and accepted

The data contract, source joins, semantic render, and release checks can pass while the new interpretation remains open to editorial revision.

Accessibility

Static first, not certified

All five bearings, seven movements, five relationship pressures, five people lenses, seven reading threads, eight sources, content notes, and limits must render in semantic static HTML without requiring client JavaScript. The optional browser or operating-system listen-aloud control must expose fifteen ordered segments drawn from this same visible orientation, questions, episode reading, and movement text.

Every movement and pressure remains complete ordered prose with explicit references. Colour is supplementary, and no map, image, recording, animation, hover state, or speech-synthesis control carries unique meaning.

Formal conformance claimed: No.

Privacy

No reader write surface

The application collects no reader answers, notes, progress, account, personalized reading history, speech choices, or listening history.

No forms, comments, submissions, authentication, database, content-management write path, audio upload, or transcription service exists.

This owner-accepted route remains outside the analytics allowlist and must send no GoatCounter page-view request. Listen-aloud uses browser or operating-system speech over text already present on the page; no guide text is sent by the application to an audio vendor, and no analytics event, parameter, fingerprinting, session replay, or person-level measurement is authorized.

Known limits

  • This is a substantial, owner-accepted first-reader guide, not a line-by-line concordance, critical edition, manuscript or genetic study, biography, complete historical account, or psychological diagnosis.
  • The seven movements and five relationship pressures are project-authored against one retained searchable witness. They are not Joyce's headings, universal edition coordinates, exact scene divisions, or a complete object and allusion inventory.
  • Mulligan's statement that he told the milkwoman to come after eight is TEXT; the eight-to-nine convention is SCHEMA evidence; approximately 08:00 to 08:45 is a RECON/WINDOW/OPEN project orientation rather than an exact internal clock.
  • The tower, stair, path, and cove are literary bearings only. No surveyed geometry, present-day navigation, private-property access, route-accessibility audit, tide or swimming advice, or field-safety review is supplied.
  • Stephen's final charge of usurpation is represented thought. The guide does not adopt it as a verdict or turn the Odyssey and Hamlet into fixed one-to-one cast lists.
  • May Dedalus and the milkwoman retain human and ethical weight beyond their functions in Stephen's grief, the men's conflict, or national and religious symbolism. The episode does not provide their private consciousness.
  • The source register supports bounded uses, not a completeness score. The Gutenberg witness, annotated secondary resource, schema presentation, institutional history, comparative texts, liturgical scan, and catalogue record have different evidentiary roles.
  • No new image, map, audio file, quotation block, or other embedded media is included. Optional listen-aloud is synthetic browser or operating-system speech over the complete static transcript; voice inventory, gender, pronunciation, naturalness, warmth, and audible completion depend on the reader's environment.
  • No empirical first-reader, affected-party, real-device, native screen-reader, voice-control, Firefox, WebKit, speech-quality, print/PDF, or formal accessibility-conformance study has yet been completed for this reconstructed route.
  • Mechanical verification, protected integration, exact Stage 1 artifact and deployment binding, all-route live-byte checks, negative privacy probes, and analytics absence passed under R-017. R-019 separately accepts this exact v0.1 literary/evidence core without converting simulated review into external expertise or changing the route's review lifecycle.

Content note in full

  • Telemachus and this guide refer to a mother's death, distressing bereavement imagery, guilt, religious mockery, antisemitism, British rule, class pressure, sexualised joking, firearm fear, drowning, bodily decay, and social humiliation. The guide attributes harmful language, paraphrases rather than repeating slurs, and does not turn grief or prejudice into spectacle.
