Above-ground stock
Gold’s owner map is partly visible—and partly unknowable.
At end-2025, the World Gold Council estimated 219,891 tonnes above ground. The headline categories describe form and use; only official reserves have reasonably observable country-level ownership.

Who holds—or uses—the stock?
These are mutually exclusive form/use buckets, not a complete register of beneficial owners. ETFs are already inside the bars, coins & ETFs category.

What “who holds” means
Private beneficial owners are not registered globally.Jewellery and bars may be held by households, family offices, banks or institutions.
ETFs are observable but already counted.Do not add ETF tonnes on top of the 50,978t bars, coins & ETFs bucket.
Official gold is the cleanest owner series.Central-bank holdings are reported by country, but they represent only about 18% of stock.

Period sourceForm/use ≠ beneficial owner. Historical scopes also change: the 1895 split covers monetary gold only; modern estimates cover all above-ground gold. Percentages are not treated as one continuous series.

WGC official holdingsPrice perspective
Why holders can matter more than miners
Annual mine supply is small relative to stock. WGC estimated 3,671.6t of 2025 mine production against 219,891t above ground—about 1.7%.
Small allocation changes can move price. Existing holders’ willingness to sell, ETF flows and central-bank accumulation can outweigh changes in annual output.
Official buying is a signal as well as a flow. It can alter other investors’ view of currency and geopolitical risk.
