Panel Session 02 — The Design of the Site
Convened 18 July 2026, on the author's commission. The build panel's own rule — no design before the documentation is complete — is satisfied, not bent: the base documents, the architecture, the URL contract and the unstyled site all shipped first (anchors A1, A18 held to the end). The author then commissioned the look. This is the record; the author ratifies, and every choice below is reversible except where the URL contract forbids.
The advisors are constructed advisory lenses named for the people whose working methods they abstract. They are not those people's opinions, and nothing here should be quoted as such.
Sitting: the standing four — Senn, Shneiderman, Braudel, Eames — plus three by trigger: Nelson (linkage), Kiberd (accessibility), Warburg (the visual). Kenner and Ginzburg were not called. The chair does not vote.
Settled going in, not re-decided: the visual system of 00-method.md — the 1922
cover palette (deep #081a35, paper #f4efe2, gold #dfa93f, ash, rose), serif for
prose and monospace for the factual layer, the print inversion, the accessibility
floor. The session decided how the site applies the system, not the system.
Round 1 — openings, in one line each
- Senn: design is a boundary rule — quoted Joyce and our gloss must be typographically inconfusable; quotation set verbatim, never justified, truncated or lifted into display type; episode titles are scaffolding and never get serif display.
- Shneiderman: the two shipped artifacts already define the interaction standard (gold focus ring, aria-pressed strips, reduced motion); bring the shell up to their floor — and gold on paper measures ~1.9:1, so gold lives on deep only.
- Braudel: the site's material substance is bookkeeping — render it as what it is; paper folio for documents, deep reserved for bounded plates; one stylesheet built to survive sixteen builds without revision. Furniture, not fashion.
- Eames: the front door currently hands a first visitor taxonomy and a count of absence; walk them to the two finished rooms first; empty states become mono exhibition labels, dignified, second.
- Nelson: addresses before paint — the record is unaddressable (no ids, artifacts with no way back); a design pass that decorates an unlinkable building is upholstery.
- Kiberd: the book belongs to ordinary readers; the house must be plain and hospitable; no front door that requires the word "dimension" to enter.
- Warburg: the site already asked for its own picture — the 16×4 grid it claims ("that is a grid") and then renders as bullet lists; show the panel whole.
Round 2 — the chair's three questions
Q1, the ground converged under attack: paper ground, deep text, wherever anyone reads for minutes — Warburg himself yielded the dark atlas ("stretching deep ground across forty-five pages of commentary would make the atlas a façade"). Deep survives as the ground of bounded plates only: the two verbatim artifacts, and exactly one new plate (Braudel's cap, Warburg's claim).
Q2, the boundary widened deliberately: Braudel's carpenter minimum (one stylesheet, skip link, wrappers) plus Nelson's cadastre — ids on every rendered heading — which Braudel accepted against his own cap as "the slowest, most durable infrastructure a document can carry." The enforcement tool inverts: from forbidding style to protecting words — built text verified against source, quotation prohibitions enforced, contrast measured, fragments resolved.
Q3, the device and refusals. Four devices proposed (addressed quotation; the 16×4 panel; the homepage threshold; the two-way address). Common refusals, unanimous: photography, network webfonts, icons, ambient character-colour wash, empty-state theatrics, serif display for schema titles.
Red lines declared: Senn — one mutilated character in a quotation fails the design. Shneiderman — nothing ships under 4.5:1 text contrast, invisible focus, or ignored reduced-motion. Braudel — nothing that must be torn out when content arrives. Eames / Kiberd — no first screen that opens on the manifest, the matrix, or method-before-day. Nelson — no paint before addresses and the artifacts' outward frame. Warburg — the grid rendered whole, never collapsed behind interaction.
The ballot and the vote
Four directions: [A] The Sealed Quotation (Senn) · [B] One Plate on the Folio (Warburg with Braudel) · [C] The Threshold and the Hospitable House (Eames with Kiberd) · [D] Addresses Before Paint (Nelson with Shneiderman).
| Senn | Shneiderman | Braudel | Eames | Nelson | Kiberd | Warburg | Total | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 3 | — | — | 2 | 2 | 2 | — | 9 |
| B | — | 2 | 3 | veto | — | veto | 3 | 4 |
| C | — | veto | veto | 3 | veto | 3 | veto | −2 |
| D | 2 | 3 | 2 | — | 3 | — | 2 | 12 |
D carries at 12; A second at 9. C died under four argued vetoes — the common charge: cinema standing where addresses and the honest overview should stand, a device that must be torn out when the rooms fill. B died at the front door: two vetoes (Eames, Kiberd) against the empty matrix as the visitor's first experience — while its panel, one level down, survives in every other direction.
The chair's synthesis (ratified by the author's commission, overrulable)
D is the direction, grafting A wholesale — their holders voted for each other, and nothing in them conflicts:
- Ground: paper
#f4efe2, deep#081a35text, site-wide. Deep ground only on bounded plates: the two artifacts, and the one new plate — the 16×4 status matrix on/dimensions/, hard-edged, mono-captioned, visible whole on load, keyboard-walkable, never filtered or collapsed while nothing is built. Gold#dfa93fon deep only;#A0701Con paper. Ash and rose do not appear in site chrome at all — they belong to Stephen and Molly, who are not on these pages yet. - The device: the visible address. Every page carries its own canonical URL, on-page, in the mono layer, copyable. Backlink apparatus is built into the templates and status-gated — it earns pixels only where the far end exists.
- The cadastre ships with the paint, same commit: ids on every rendered heading of every document page; an outward orientation frame on both artifact pages (the artifact itself returns to byte-verbatim — the frame is the site's, not an injection). The 117-page companion is a PDF and cannot take ids; its addressability arrives with dimension 11's HTML register, and this is recorded rather than faked.
- The quotation grammar installs now, before any dimension improvises one: blockquote with cite and mono episode-address slot; quoted matter never justified, hyphenated, clamped, ellipsized or case-transformed. Episode titles, wherever the site itself speaks them, are mono scaffolding labels, never serif display.
- The front door honours the two red lines that killed C and B: the first screen speaks the day and the two finished rooms before any taxonomy; the entrances and the grid come second. Prose edits to the overview page are site-voice and permitted.
- Enforcement inverts.
tools/check.mjsstops forbidding style and starts protecting words: one stylesheet and no other styling vector; rendered document text unchanged against source; artifacts byte-identical; declared colour pairings measured against WCAG in a committed manifest (data/design.json); fragment links resolve. - Typography stays system-stack (a webfont is a network dependency and a fabrication of provenance the panel refused): serif for prose, monospace for the factual layer — status, addresses, hours, captions, empty-state labels, which keep their exact wording and move to the mono voice.
Deferred, recorded: Shneiderman's filter idiom for the matrix — until there is something built to filter. Eames's scale-journey homepage — until the rooms exist. Warburg's full atlas — his standing proposal, noted again, still pending dimension 14.
Session record kept by the chair. Implementation follows in docs/06-design.md; the
swarm that produced the working stylesheet candidates and the user-cohort tests are
recorded there.
