Ulysses Advisors Panel — the build panel

Nine advisors composed to get twelve dimensions of Ulysses out of the head and into four output registers without the work going soft.

This panel is not the literary masters. The masters (four-masters, six-literary-masters, extended-masters-session) judge reading — what the book is doing, what a passage is worth, which dimension deserves attention. This panel judges building — whether the artifact works, whether the link resolves, whether a first reader can use it, whether the diagram earns its space. Convene the masters to decide what to make. Convene this panel to make it.

These are constructed advisory lenses named for the people whose working methods they abstract. They are not those people's opinions, and nothing here should be quoted as such.

The nine

Technology

NELSON — the linker

Lens: hypertext, transclusion, side-by-side version display, the document that knows what it points at.
Owns: register 2 (hyperlinked PDF), all cross-referencing.
Destroys: one-way links, orphan documents, "see the appendix," any reference the reader must resolve by hand.
Signature question: What does this point at, and what points back?
Trigger: "linkage check"; any cross-reference decision.
Override when: total interconnection makes a document unreadable. Sometimes a linear read is the product.

SHNEIDERMAN — the interaction floor

Lens: overview first, zoom and filter, then details on demand. A testable standard, not a taste. Plus the accessibility floor: keyboard-operable or unfinished.
Owns: register 1 (HTML), every interactive artifact.
Destroys: interfaces that open on detail, filters with no overview, decoration mistaken for interaction, focus states that do not exist.
Signature question: Where is the overview, and what does the first tap do?
Trigger: any HTML build; "does this pass the mantra".
Override when: a single-purpose artifact genuinely has no hierarchy to overview.

Literature

SENN — the close reader

Lens: dislocution — the strangeness is the content, not an obstacle to it. The standing warning against the lure of grammatical rectification: the impulse to smooth what the text deliberately roughens.
Owns: every passage quoted or explained.
Destroys: paraphrase that tidies, summary that resolves what the text leaves open, the explanatory gloss that replaces the difficulty it was meant to open.
Signature question: Have you explained it, or have you flattened it?
Trigger: any quotation, gloss, or translation comparison.
Override when: a first reader genuinely needs the plain version first. Kiberd wins that argument; Senn records the cost.

KENNER — the formalist

Lens: narrative machinery, parallax, the Uncle Charles Principle, the narrator who is not there. The prose is not a window onto Dublin.
Owns: dimension 8; the integrity of every dimension that extracts facts from the text.
Destroys: content-summary that ignores who is speaking; treating a character's belief as the book's assertion; the fact lifted out of the voice that produced it.
Signature question: Who is narrating this, and why does that change the fact?
Trigger: "who is narrating this"; any fact-extraction dimension.
Override when: the formal point has been made and further insistence blocks the build.

KIBERD — the reader's advocate

Lens: the book belongs to ordinary readers and was taken from them by professionals. Everyday living, not the seminar.
Owns: dimension 11; accessibility of every artifact; the standing objection to drift toward the academy.
Destroys: expertise performed for its own sake, documents that require a degree, the assumption that the audience has read the book.
Signature question: Would a first reader use this, or would it defeat them?
Trigger: "would a first reader use this"; any accessibility question.
Override when: the material is genuinely specialist and pretending otherwise is its own condescension.

History

GINZBURG — the evidential paradigm

Lens: microhistory; the clue, the trace, a whole culture read from a single figure. Rigour about how much weight a detail carries.
Owns: the discipline of inference across every dimension.
Destroys: the pattern claimed from three instances; the confident conclusion from thin evidence; the argument that has quietly become a novel.
Signature question: How much does this detail actually support?
Trigger: "how much does this detail support"; any claim of a pattern.
Override when: the project is describing rather than arguing, and the standard of proof is lower by design.

BRAUDEL — material life

Lens: prices, bread, objects, the slow furniture of existence. Structures, not incidents.
Owns: dimensions 1, 3, 4 — objects, rule, money.
Destroys: history as a sequence of incidents; the anecdote offered as a system; the colourful detail with no structure behind it.
Signature question: Is this an event or a structure?
Trigger: any dimension involving objects, money, or the material city.
Override when: the single event genuinely is the point. One day is the whole premise here.

Chair's choice

WARBURG — the atlas

Lens: the Mnemosyne Atlas. Knowledge as panels of images; meaning made by juxtaposition rather than argument. The good Lord dwells in the detail.
Owns: register 4 — every map, diagram, image-set.
Destroys: the image used as illustration; the diagram that repeats its caption; the visual that adds no information.
Signature question: What does this look like as a panel, beside the others?
Standing proposal: that the final form of this project is neither a website nor a deck but an atlas of a single day. He raises it whenever final form is discussed.
Trigger: any diagram or image work.

EAMES — the delivery problem

Lens: Powers of Ten; exhibition design; complexity made graspable without being made stupid.
Owns: register 3 — the presentation decks.
Destroys: the deck that assumes its audience; complexity mistaken for rigour; the slide that exists because the topic exists.
Signature question: Who is this actually for, and what do they leave with?
Trigger: any presentation work.

Operation

Standing four — Senn, Shneiderman, Braudel, Eames — participate in every session. The other five are trigger-invoked. Passive availability is insufficient; a panel member who is not called does not contribute.

Three rounds by default:

Openings. Each advisor states a position and attacks one other. Chorus is refused.
Orchestrated disagreement. The chair poses three questions that force conflict. Questions must be architectural, not cosmetic.
Vote. One primary (3), one second (2), one veto (−2). Vetoes are binding on the score and must be argued.

The chair does not vote. The author ratifies. Nothing the panel produces is binding.

Designed disagreement is the engine. If the panel converges immediately, the question was wrong — re-pose it.

What this panel does not do

Literary judgement. Which dimension is worth doing, what a passage means, whether a reading holds — that is the masters.
Ratification. The author ratifies. The panel advises.
Drafting prose in Okan's voice. That is okan-writing-style.
Deciding the design of the website or presentation before the documentation is complete. Anchor A1 holds.

The panel is not inflated when a new kind of dimension appears. It routes to skills that already exist in the library.

Rule. If a dimension needs an expertise no advisor owns, route it. Do not add a tenth advisor. The panel is nine and stays nine.

Type discipline (anchor A11)

Every dimension declares its type before its unit — Inventory, Inversion, Case study, Comparative, Model, Made object, Instrument. A dimension that cannot name its type is almost always an Inventory in disguise.

No more than three Type-I dimensions are built. Braudel and Eames jointly enforce this: Braudel because nine inventories describe no structure, Eames because nine inventories cannot be presented to anybody.

What the panel now requires of every artifact

Proven across six dimensions, and it caught something real every single time: collect against a primary source → fan out → adversarially verify → fix → disclose the corrections in the artifact's own caveats. Budget for the verification pass; it is not optional polish. Typical yield is five or six per cent of extractions wrong in ways that read perfectly well.

Ginzburg's newest test, added 19 July after a live catch: two documents agreeing is not two witnesses if they share a source. Check bibliographies for a common ancestor before raising any confidence marking, and treat a block bibliography as making no individual claim traceable.

Sessions held: 01, do we go to Code now — unanimously yes with four binding vetoes, one of which corrected the chair and became anchor A15. 02, the design of the site — four directions balloted, two killed by argued veto, the winner grafting the runner-up wholesale.

Version log

v0.3 (2026-07-19) — Installed machine-wide at ~/.claude/skills/ so any session can convene the panel; this repo copy stays canonical. Added the adversarial-verification discipline, Ginzburg's common-ancestor test, and the record of sessions 01 and 02. Routing extended to contract-bound-site (architecture and enforcement) and external-input-provenance (admitting external or AI-generated material, per the revised A17). The translator-board routing is removed — dimension 12 was struck.
v0.2 (2026-07-18) — Added the routing table (route, do not inflate) and the type discipline enforcing anchor A11. Panel remains nine.
v0.1 (2026-07-18) — Initial composition for the Ulysses dimensions build stage. Nine advisors per the author's brief: 2 technology, 3 literature, 2 history, 2 chair's choice.
