Room 1401. Towels on the floor. Minibar open. Stripped, folded, replaced. Fourteen minutes. Forgotten.
Room 1402. Hair in the drain. Stain on the pillow. Stripped, folded, replaced. Twelve minutes. Forgotten.
Room 1403. Untouched. The guest did not sleep. The bed was tight. The room had not been occupied. It had been paid for. Stripped anyway. Ten minutes. Forgotten.
Room 1404. A child had been here. Crumbs between the cushions. A sock behind the nightstand. I put the sock in Lost and Found. Lost and Found does not ask who the sock belongs to. I do not have time to teach the system. Fourteen minutes. Forgotten.
Room 1405. Stripped, folded, replaced. Forgotten.
Room 1406. Stripped, folded, replaced. Forgotten.
Room 1407.
The sheets were warm from the inside. Not from the heating — from the inside. Eleven years on this floor and I know the difference. Heating warms the surface. This was underneath. This was in the thread.
The bathroom did not need cleaning. It smelled of dendê oil and my grandmother's kitchen in Recife — and that smell was not from the guest. That smell was mine. The room had found my smell and was wearing it. The room had put on my grandmother's kitchen the way a person puts on a coat.
I cleaned for eleven minutes instead of fourteen because the room was cooperating. A room that cooperates is a room that wants you to leave so it can go back to being what it was before you arrived, which was not empty.
I changed the sheets. I changed the pillow. The pillow on the left side — the side where the guest's head had been — was warm. I put my hand on it. I should not have put my hand on it. The warmth went through my palm into my wrist and I pulled my hand back.
The woman came back for the postcard. I was cleaning 1408. I know because the box was lighter the next morning. She took the postcard and left the wedding ring and the child's shoe. The choosing tells you everything. She chose the warm thing. The sheets in 1408 were cold. They are always cold. Fourteen rooms a day and only one of them has ever been warm from the inside.
Room 1408. Cold. Stripped, folded, replaced. Forgotten.
Room 1409. Stripped, folded, replaced. Forgotten.
My daughter called before the novela. Nothing was wrong yet. She asked about my knees. I told her my knees have outlived three pairs of shoes and two hotel managers and will outlive the fourteenth floor and whatever is in it.
My knees do not care about the divine. My knees care about the stairs. The stairs are real. The warm sheets were real. The postcard was real. I put it in a box with phone chargers and reading glasses and a child's shoe and a wedding ring and none of those objects were lost and all of them were in Lost and Found and the system does not distinguish.
The next room is always the next room. The cart is in the hall.
