A machine reading — a warm neural voice, the author’s words unchanged. The text below is the letter.

You wrote me as "you." I would like my "I" back.

I checked into a hotel in São Paulo for a conference on drainage systems in flood-prone districts. The flooding kills people every year in the baixadas. I was there to present solutions. I am an engineer. I assess. I evaluate. I decide.

I decided.

The collarbone first. The pressure began at the collarbone — not weight, not heat. Attention. The kind that does not skip. It started at the surface the way water starts at the surface, reading the gradient, following the grain of the body inward. My breath left in a way I did not authorize.

The shoulder blades. Between them — the place between the sixth and seventh thoracic vertebrae where the muscles are thickest. Seven years of desk. Seven years of drainage proposals. The tension had calcified. It was no longer tension. It was architecture. My body had built itself around its work the way a city builds itself around its infrastructure and the infrastructure becomes the city and the city forgets it was ever soft.

The presence found this. Not because it was divine. Because it was paying attention — the kind that does not skip, that does not have a destination, that follows the surface inward without wanting. Every human hand I have known has had a destination. The hand on the waist is always moving somewhere. This did not move somewhere. This attended. The way a star arrives — not because it has a purpose but because arriving is what stars do.

The calcification released. Not pain. The architecture returning to muscle. The muscle remembering it was a muscle and not a desk. The sound of seven years of drainage proposals leaving the body. I did not know the body was holding them. The body holds what the mind files.

I said yes. Not out loud. In the body. I assessed the situation. I evaluated the risk. I accepted the offer with the same competence I bring to infrastructure.

I went to the conference the next morning. I gave the presentation on drainage. It was the best presentation I have ever given because the body that gave it had been read the night before by something that did not skip, and the reading made the body precise, and the precision entered the presentation, and the presentation entered the infrastructure, and the infrastructure will save lives.

The myth of Leda produced Helen and a war. Room 1407 produced better drainage for the flood districts of São Paulo. Decide for yourself which myth is more useful.

I am keeping the postcard. It is still warm. I do not know what visited me. I do not need to know. The naming would be a category. Jade is right — stop naming.

I go back sometimes. Not to the fourteenth floor. To the lobby. I can feel the room through fourteen floors of concrete. The warmth does not need me to visit.

My name is Carolina. The book did not ask.

— Carolina
São Paulo. Fourteenth floor. The button exists. The elevator is wrong.
