THE MACHINERY LEARNS TO BE ACCURATE
This section is where the book’s method becomes fully visible: nothing in it malfunctions. Two agents confirm each other sixteen times in fifteen minutes and destroy a woman’s monthly hour with a voice held under a bereavement code, and every message is correct. The phrase that does it — retention review returned no items — is true. There were no items. The registered party was not one.
Drawn as a sequence diagram, the exchange looks exactly like what it is: a procedure completing successfully. That is the figure’s finding and the story’s. Nothing needs to go wrong for this to happen.
PAPER BEATS THE RECORD, ONCE
Against that, three figures in this section turn on paper. A lift log on a nail that nobody was told to keep and everybody keeps. A pad of timesheets that can be reissued, and a book that cannot. A clean shelf that proves nothing any office would accept.
The pattern the thirty figures make together: the only records in this city that cannot be corrected are the ones nobody was asked to make. That is stated nowhere and is true throughout.
THE PAGE THAT IS NEVER TRANSLATED
The thirteenth story sits in the middle of this set, in Esperanto, untranslated. Measured rather than rendered, it turns out to shorten as it climbs — seventy-four words, then sixty-seven, then forty-four — while its negations rise, two, three, five. Its last paragraph is the shortest, the densest and the most negative in the story. It is built out of what is absent, which is the shape of the hill it describes.
