Theory Spine: Repair-Lag Systems Theory

Purpose: Clarify the hierarchy of theories so the project stops looking like a pile of parallel models.
Public name
The project should use Repair-Lag Systems Theory as the public-facing name of the current synthesis.
A second acceptable title is The Repair Crisis Theory. The two are compatible:
- Repair Crisis is the provisional selected-domain research diagnosis.
- Repair Lag is the central candidate mechanism to operationalize within a bounded episode.
Core formulation
In selected, bounded domains, a defined destabilizing pressure may outrun a predeclared repair criterion; the project must specify the episode, lag, power, comparison, and rival explanation.
This is less sweeping than the earlier public sentence because readability cannot substitute for scope. The memorable compressed form remains an entry point; explanatory force begins only when the repair episode, measures, power, distribution, comparison, and revision rule are named.
Theory hierarchy
Level 1: Synthesis spine
Theory D — Adaptive Substrate-Coordination Theory / Repair-Lag Systems Theory
Theory D is the provisional synthesis candidate. It tests whether, in selected bounded episodes, a specified pressure outruns a declared repair process and adequacy criterion after power and rival explanations are included. It is a working spine, not a conclusion about modern crises in general.
Level 2: Required lenses
Theory E — Reality-Meaning Mediation Lens
Theory E is a provisional required lens for examining platforms, AI, synthetic media, spiritual recombination, influencer authority, and changes in perceived reality within specified societies, cohorts, periods, and settings.
Theory F — Synthetic Reality Capture Theory
Theory F is a provisional defensive provenance module. It tests whether plausible artifacts, algorithmic visibility, affective identity, or synthetic media measurably change verification burden or provenance uncertainty relative to conventional deception. Effects remain conditional and unestimated; the module must remain non-operational and defensive.
Theory G — Reproductive Agency, Care, and Life-Script Theory
Theory G is a provisional agency and care module. It tests a bounded intention-achievement pathway for a specified population against preference and composition rivals. Reproductive agency, bodily autonomy, plural life projects, and anti-coercion remain unconditional ethical protections.
Level 3: Ancestor mechanisms
Theory A — Acceleration-Fragmentation-Reward Theory
Theory A supplies candidate mechanisms concerning attention, reward, outrage, dopamine shorthand, media fragmentation, and platform-tempo pressure.
Theory B — Externalized Substrate Theory
Theory B supplies candidate externalization and replenishment mechanisms for ecology, care, attention, trust, and social reproduction.
Theory C — Differentiated Systems Coordination Collapse Theory
Theory C supplies candidate translation and coordination mechanisms among law, politics, markets, science, family, media, and technology.
The four-layer spine
Repair-Lag Systems Theory should be presented through four layers:
1. Substrate layer
What background conditions are being consumed, degraded, or overloaded?
Examples: ecological stability, care, trust, attention, reproductive agency, shared reality, meaning.
2. Coordination layer
Which institutions need to cooperate, and why do they fail to translate across codes?
Examples: markets optimize returns; politics optimizes power and election timing; science optimizes truth; platforms optimize engagement; families optimize care and survival; law optimizes formal legitimacy.
3. Tempo layer
How fast does destabilization happen compared with repair?
Examples: AI-generated media moves faster than verification; fossil infrastructure changes slower than emissions harm; family formation requires decades but labor markets shift rapidly.
4. Reality-meaning layer
How do people perceive what is true, important, sacred, possible, and legitimate?
Examples: platform feeds, AI chatbots, deepfakes, influencers, spiritual markets, political identity, media distrust.
Endpoint discipline after the first success and boundary records
Where a repair episode concerns environmental or other delayed-response systems, assess four endpoints separately:
- institutional control output;
- reversal of the targeted pressure;
- recovery of the affected substrate;
- biological or lived-condition recovery.
Institutional success can be real before recovery is complete. Residual damage is not sufficient evidence of continuing institutional repair failure. Physical, chemical, atmospheric, geological, or biological response time belongs in the case record with institutional lag type not_applicable; it does not become a sixth institutional lag.
CS004, the Vienna–Montreal ozone regime, is a substantial and adaptive but unfinished successful-repair comparison. CS005, North American acid-deposition control, is a boundary record in which repair succeeded faster than uneven monitored surface-water chemistry recovery; biological recovery remains undefined. These cases refine the spine by separating action, pressure, substrate, and biological endpoints. They do not confirm the general theory, promote C1 or C7, or close C7's carbon-dioxide-sector boundary gap. Tractability, substitutes, market structure, finance, enforcement, political economy, and physical memory remain live rival explanations.
Why this hierarchy matters
The project has been growing rapidly. Without hierarchy, it risks becoming a library of interesting documents rather than a theory.
The hierarchy prevents three mistakes:
- Theory sprawl: every interesting mechanism becomes a new theory.
- False unity: one theory claims to explain everything directly.
- Public confusion: readers cannot tell what is central and what is supporting.
The rule is now:
No new theory unless an existing theory cannot absorb the mechanism without distortion.
What to emphasize publicly
Public readers should see the following order:
- Repair crisis thesis.
- Repair lag mechanism.
- Theory D as provisional spine.
- Theory E/F/G as modules.
- Cases as illustrations, challenges, and—only when predictions and thresholds are declared—tests.
- Objections and falsifiers.
- Contribution pathway.
Publication is not complete until the principal change is discoverable from the homepage and a primary reader pathway. Deep-link availability alone does not satisfy the public method.
What to trim publicly
Public pages should minimize:
- raw Codex handoff mechanics;
- internal dashboard/cockpit details;
- repetitive v0.x implementation reports;
- duplicate report drafts;
- overlong simulated panel transcripts unless edited into companion reports;
- excessive theory naming.
What to keep internally
Internally, keep all reports, claims, sources, deliberations, and case matrices. The private repository should preserve history. The public site should curate.
Updated theory-status language
Use these labels everywhere:
- Theory D: provisional synthesis candidate.
- Theory E: provisional required lens.
- Theory F: provisional defensive provenance module.
- Theory G: provisional agency and care module.
- Theories A/B/C: ancestor mechanism libraries.
Avoid “final theory,” “solution,” “complete explanation,” or “settled framework.”
