Frontier: Open Questions and Live Disagreements
This page is where the project refuses to pretend it is finished.
A living theory should show its open edges. It should name what might weaken it, what it still cannot explain, and where disagreement remains productive.
The central open question
Is repair lag a central systems pattern of the current era, or is it only a useful metaphor that becomes too broad when stretched across climate, propaganda, fertility, belief, trust, and institutions?
The project currently argues that repair lag is more than a metaphor. But that must be earned through cases, objections, and revision.
Questions that remain open
1. How should repair be measured?
Repair is not one thing. Ecological repair, trust repair, care repair, institutional repair, and meaning repair work differently. The project needs better ways to distinguish real repair from adaptation, resignation, symbolic management, nostalgia, and damage displacement.
2. When is slowness failure, and when is slowness wisdom?
Not every delay is bad. Some institutions should slow action. Courts, science, deliberation, care, and ethical review all require time. The question is when protective slowness becomes destructive repair lag.
3. Which cases most strongly challenge the theory?
The theory should look for cases where societies repair quickly, durably, and democratically under pressure. It should also look for cases where the repair-lag explanation adds little beyond simpler explanations such as money, coercion, ideology, geography, or war.
4. Does the theory underplay power?
Repair does not fail only because systems are complex. It can fail because powerful actors benefit from delay, confusion, externalization, and non-repair. Any serious version of the theory must include capture, sabotage, and unequal exposure to damage.
5. Does the theory underplay genuine value change?
Fertility, belief, work, identity, and family life are not merely damaged by systems. People also choose different lives. The project must not convert freedom into pathology. It must distinguish preference change from constrained agency.
6. Does “Uncommon Reality” risk sounding merely aesthetic?
The name is useful only if it remains connected to the theory. It should not become detached branding. The phrase names a condition: common reality cannot be assumed. The theory must explain how that condition is produced.
Strongest objections now
The project must keep these objections visible:
- The theory may be too broad.
- Repair lag may rename complexity without adding explanation.
- The project may overstate technology and understate capitalism, geopolitics, religion, or class.
- The fertility module could be misread as pronatalist unless the anti-coercion frame stays explicit.
- The propaganda module could be misread as a call for information control unless the provenance-defense frame stays explicit.
- The public dashboard could make provisional theories look more settled than they are.
- The simulated panel method could look like false authority unless its status is repeatedly clarified.
What would change our mind
The theory weakens if:
- societies with strong repair capacity show the same failures for unrelated reasons;
- synthetic media does not materially increase verification burden, mistrust, or institutional strain;
- fertility outcomes are better explained without care, agency, life-script, and future-confidence mechanisms;
- meaning-market pluralization proves more stabilizing than fragmenting in many cases;
- climate delay is explained adequately without repair latency, legitimacy conflict, coordination failure, or substrate externalization;
- rival theories explain the same cases with fewer assumptions and better predictive force.
Next frontier work
The next research stage should deepen public usefulness rather than add more theory names.
Priorities:
- sharpen the public glossary;
- make theory cards show objections and falsifiers clearly;
- expand case studies only where they test the spine;
- show where the theory is uncertain;
- separate reader-facing navigation from private maintenance tools;
- build a contribution path that invites disagreement, not fan loyalty.
The project should remain open, but not shapeless.
