Ulysses — The Fifteen Dimensions

Working document · build stage · v2 Base document 04. Revised 18 July 2026 after a review that found the first version structurally repetitive. Read this instead of v1.

THE REVIEW FINDING

The first version listed twelve dimensions. Ten of them were the same operation: extract a category, enumerate it, tabulate it, visualise it. Objects, women, money, bodies, the dead, songs, styles, schemas — the unit changes, the epistemic move does not. The three documents already built were that operation too.

Cortázar said this during the masters session — an inventory is not a dimension, it is a spreadsheet with ambition — and Galeano said his method destroys enumeration. Both were logged and neither was acted on.

A second finding, from the coverage survey, cuts the same way. Every content angle tested turned out to be taken. Smell, error, animals, accuracy against Thom's — and then money, which has a dedicated online resource and a liquidity analysis precise enough to determine which coins Bloom could physically have been holding. Even the immersive route is occupied: Boston College's Joycestick is a VR object-gathering game set in the novel's scenes, which is essentially the Object Museum in three dimensions.

Conclusion. Novelty will not come from subject. It has to come from form and standpoint. Dimension 11 is strong not because nobody has thought about reader difficulty, but because of who is doing the looking — one reader's actual first read.

So the dimensions are now organised by type of operation, and the additions are chosen to fill types the project does not yet have.

THE SEVEN TYPES

Type Operation Output is Dimensions
I · Inventory extract a category, enumerate, tabulate a reference 1–8, 10 (and all three built so far)
II · Inversion map the absence rather than the presence a reference of negatives 9
III · Case study primary evidence from one reader an argument from data 11
IV · Comparative the book against other versions of itself a parallel text 16 (12 struck)
V · Model a constructed system you operate a thing that runs 13
VI · Made object a work, not a document about a work art 14
VII · Instrument a tool a reader uses on their own read a tool the reader keeps (revised 18 Jul: nothing returns) 15

The standing recommendation, and it is the important one: build no more than three of the nine Type-I dimensions. Nine inventories is a spreadsheet collection, however good each one is. Better to build three excellently and spend the rest of the effort on types the project does not yet have.

THE FIFTEEN

Type I — Inventory (cap at three)

# Dimension Panel Unit
1 The Object Museum 8 the object (~30) — position hour by hour, hand to hand
2 The Women's Dublin 7 the woman (~15) — income, mobility, interiority
3 The Governed City 5 the instrument of rule — Castle, police, barracks, informers, language
4 The Ledger 3 the transaction (note: heavily covered elsewhere — see source-research)
5 The Body's Accounts 3 the passage in or out, across nineteen hours
6 The Dead 2 the deceased, and the mode of each return
7 The Songbook 1 the song, the singer, and what the words do against the scene
8 The Eighteen Styles 0 the episode's technique and what it costs the reader
10 The Apparatus −3 Linati vs Gilbert, and the book with the grid switched off

Chair's pick of the three: 1, 2, 3. Highest panel scores, least duplicated elsewhere, and together they cover object, gender and power — three different kinds of claim rather than three sizes of list.

Type II — Inversion

9 · The Concordance of Failures (panel −2, survives on Cortázar's inversion) Not the Homeric matches — the eighteen places where Joyce refuses Homer. Odysseus kills the suitors; Bloom gets into bed the wrong way round and asks for breakfast. Odysseus is known by his scar; Bloom is recognised by nobody, and the one unidentified man stays unidentified. Penelope holds out twenty years; Molly does not hold out one afternoon — and the book says yes to her anyway. One column, eighteen rows.

Type III — Case study

11 · The Difficulty Curve Where readers actually break, why, and what it costs to get through. The abandonment of Ulysses is globally famous and rests on almost nothing: the best-known metric is the "Hawking Index," invented in 2014 using Kindle highlight positions as a proxy and unscientific by its own framing; the claim that readers break at Proteus is classroom folklore attributed to no study. This project holds a complete dated log of one first reading with page-anchored questions at the exact points of strain and the interventions that resolved them. n = 1, stated in the document's own voice (anchor A10).

Type IV — Comparative

12 · Ulysses in Turkish — STRUCK by the author, 18 July 2026. The translation comparison leaves the project — a structural decision, recorded as catch C-21. The number is not reused; the published address remains as a dropped record per the URL contract.

Type IV — Comparative (second)

16 · FOUR ODYSSEYS

Homer, Wilson, Joyce — three works measured on two axes that are usually collapsed into one; reports of Nolan 2026 held to a register, off both axes. Material in hand: reading/Four_Odysseys_Handoff.pdf. Corrected 4 August 2026: this heading read "Homer, Wilson, Nolan, Joyce — measured on two axes" — counting the reported film among the measured works, which is the axis-membership claim the re-founding withdrew.

The source document's real contribution is not the four-way comparison but the frame that makes one possible: separating fidelity to Homer's plot and genre from empathetic and interior orientation. Collapsed into a single "which is more empathetic" scale, the distinction that matters disappears.

Work Fidelity to plot/genre Interior orientation Mechanism
Homer 100% — the source externalised; kleos and xenia oral epic; character through action
Wilson (2017) 100% — invents no plot high, without touching plot register — plain diction, refusal of archaism
Nolan (2026) journalism reports substantial fidelity with named departures; no measurement was made and none can be (C-31) reported to reach for interiority by adding content; no band is assigned — a second-hand term takes no position on a measured axis adaptation — new scenes, reframed motive (reported)
Joyce (1922) ~0% — plot abandoned maximal, structural genre transformation — myth as scaffolding

Corrected 4 August 2026: the film's row read "~70% — keeps genre, rewrites motive" and "medium-high, by adding content" — positions on measured axes held by second-hand evidence, both withdrawn (a percentage asserts that a measurement was made, and none was). The film holds no axis position in any register; every report about it, with status and date, is in data/nolan-reports.json, the register of reports struck 4 August 2026.

The sentence that carries it: Wilson de-mystifies the sentence. Joyce discards the myth's events and re-mystifies the ordinary. Corrected 4 August 2026: this sentence carried a middle clause — "Nolan de-mystifies the hero but keeps the myth" — a claim about a film nobody here has seen, withdrawn with the re-founding; what is reported of the film is in the register, marked as report.

And the finding worth arguing in public: Wilson and Joyce share an anti-mystification impulse — both remove something (archaism; heroic distance) rather than add. Corrected 4 August 2026: this paragraph went on to state the contrast as a finding — "Nolan adds. That is three different kinds of empathy" — and the ADD/REMOVE contrast is withdrawn as a finding and restated as a question the evidence cannot close: the reported film was the sole occupant of the ADD pole, and every claim about it is second-hand, permanently (C-31).

Why it pairs with dimension 9. The Concordance of Failures maps where Joyce refuses Homer. This supplies the measuring stick — refusing plot and refusing register are different acts. Build 16 first; it gives 9 its frame.

Evidence discipline, binding. The source was written one day after the film opened, from reviews rather than from the film. It marks its own confidence — High / Medium / Partial / Unconfirmed — and those markings survive into anything published (A5). Four questions were held open: the Cattle of the Sun resolution, Calypso's memory arc, the Laestrygonian child, and whether Nolan has ever mentioned Joyce — nothing found.

Closed, 19 July 2026 (catch C-31). All four are now permanently unresolved, not pending. Each would need the film itself, and the author has ruled that this project does not consult primary sources it does not hold — no screening, and no library visit for the printed translation either. That is the project's reach, declared. The questions are kept on the record with their last known state rather than deleted, because an abandoned path is shown, not hidden (A4), and because a question nobody can answer is a limit rather than an open item (learning L-18). The Wilson half was verified against public sources the same day (C-30) and its markings are final: the equal line count is High, the figure 12,110 is withdrawn as untraceable, "strict" is withdrawn in favour of Wilson's own word regular, and the slave choice is High and primary for deliberateness while the implied uniformity is Partial — she writes "often", and in the Book 22 hanging she writes these girls. What this dimension actually claims — that fidelity to plot and interior orientation are separable axes — never rested on the unverifiable film detail.

Updated 19 July 2026. Commentary admitted by the author under the revised A17 (C-23) relays fuller July 2026 reporting. It adds three departures — Sinon imported from Virgil's Aeneid in place of Achilles in Hades; the hanging of the slave girls elided and displaced onto a single betrayer; an ending in which Odysseus is exiled rather than celebrated — all of which push Nolan's fidelity to the low edge of ~70% without earning a move of the marker, because the evidence is still second-hand. Corrected 4 August 2026: the marker itself is gone — demoted from a number to a sentence, and the three departures stand as entries of the register of reports (data/nolan-reports.json). The reported film holds no axis position in any register. It also gives the dimension its sharpest test of the two axes: at the hangings, Wilson refuses to look away and Nolan removes the scene — the same event, and the translator is the one who will not soften it. Of the four open questions, Calypso's arc narrows (reported as erasure then release) and three stand. The commentary's assertion that Nolan reads Homer through Joyce is the commentator's interpretation, not a source: open question 4 is not closed by it.

Registers: 2 and 3, with the two-axis chart as the diagram (4).

Type V — Model

13 · THE CONSTRAINT MODEL

A toy model of the day as a routing-and-avoidance problem. You operate it; you do not read it.

Not a walkthrough and not a recreation. Joycestick already occupies that ground — a VR game where you gather modelled objects in the novel's scenes, which is the Object Museum rendered in three dimensions. This has no representation at all. No streets to look at, no Dublin to visit. A graph, a clock, a purse, and a set of obligations.

The model. Bloom starts with four shillings and ninepence. He has a funeral he must attend, an advertisement he must place, a wife he cannot go home to before four, and one man he must not meet. Stephen starts with three pounds twelve, no key, and no obligation at all. The city is a graph with real travel times taken from base document 03. The clock runs from eight in the morning.

What it reveals that a table cannot. Run it and the day's actual shape emerges: Bloom's day is governed by avoidance, not intention — nearly every route decision he makes is a decision not to be somewhere. Stephen's is governed by having surrendered a key — with nowhere to return to, every hour compounds. And the near-misses turn out not to be coincidences the novelist arranged but the expected outcome of two agents moving around a small city with overlapping errands. That last result is worth the whole exercise: it converts Joyce's most-praised contrivance into something structural.

Honesty rule. This is a toy model in the economist's sense. It is not a claim about what the characters felt or intended, and the document says so in its own voice.

Routes to: game-design-experts for the systems design; deep-thinkers if the model's claims need pressure-testing before publication. Registers: 1 above all. A short PDF explaining the model and its results (2). One diagram of the constraint graph (4).

Type VI — Made object

14 · THE ATLAS OF ONE DAY

Eighteen panels. Meaning made by juxtaposition rather than by argument.

Warburg's standing proposal, promoted from an open question to a dimension. The Mnemosyne Atlas arranged images on black panels so that relationships appeared without being asserted — no captions doing the thinking, no narrative sequence. One panel per episode. The place as it is now, the object, the newspaper page, the tram map, the handwriting, the schema entry, the photograph. That was the proposal as made, and the rights survey of 19 July 2026 removed three of its seven classes — the newspaper page, the tram map and the handwriting are dropped as uncleanable (see below). The panel as built carries three layers: an object, a place, a period document. No explanatory text on the panel itself. Struck rather than rewritten, 25 July 2026: the proposal is shown as it was made (anchor A4), but it had been standing here as a description of what the panel holds, on a published page, five days after three of the seven were dropped.

Why it belongs here. Every other dimension produces a document about the book. This produces a work. It is also the only dimension that plays to the photographic and image-making side of this practice rather than the analytic side, and the Exposures series has already established the form.

Why it is not covered. Ulysses has illustrated editions (Matisse, Motherwell) and a comics adaptation. Illustration serves the text. An atlas does not — it argues visually and refuses the caption. Nobody has built one for this novel.

Rescoped by the author, 19 July 2026 — publicly available material only, or struck. It is not struck: a four-class rights survey with adversarial challenge found the problem avoidable (catch C-32). The panel is object + place + period document, each sourced from repositories that impose no terms of their own — Wikimedia Commons per file for the object and the place, Thom's 1904 directory for the document, the National Library of Scotland's Ordnance Survey sheets for the map — with every image carrying a named licence at a named URL on a credits page. Corrected 25 July 2026: this sentence read "place + period document" and named two layers. It was written on 19 July while the object layer was still unsurveyed; catch C-33 cleared 17 of the 18 objects later the same day and this line was never revisited, so the published definition of a panel undercounted it by a layer for six days (anchor A4). The governing principle: an institution's terms are not the copyright. The NLI and Tailte Éireann both assert conditions over their own scans while holding no copyright in the underlying works, so the remedy is sourcing rather than permission.

The refusal of captions turned out to be the clearance, not the obstacle. CC BY permits attribution in a colophon, and CC BY-SA 2.0's "at least as prominent as any other authorship credit" clause is satisfied vacuously while no panel carries any credit at all. Warburg's form and the licence compliance are one decision — and one signature added to a panel would breach every share-alike licence on it at once (learning L-19, RIGHTS.md clause 7).

Dropped as uncleanable: any page scan of a 16 June 1904 Dublin newspaper (the 1904 text is public domain; the scans are held by their digitisers and no free source exists); Joyce's handwriting and every manuscript image (the Rosenbach neither grants nor denies, and unpublished Joyce stays in UK copyright until 2039); photographic portraits of Joyce; the separate tram map, whose information Thom's already carries.

Two gates, and the dimension is not begun until both clear. The object layer — the third register — has not been surveyed at all; if eighteen objects cannot each be given a licence, the panel falls to two registers, which is thinner but still juxtaposition. And the Ordnance Survey licence line has been read by nobody: it rests on a peer-reviewed description of the arrangement rather than the arrangement itself.

Both gates closed on 19 July 2026 (catch C-33), and this page went on saying they were open until 25 July. The object layer cleared 17 of 18, each with a named licence at a named URL, fetched rather than inferred; the one that did not clear (episode 17) is ruled to take a period document in its slot instead — ruled, not acquired: the manifest records a candidate and a preference among three, and nothing has been fetched. The Ordnance Survey licence was read rather than described: the per-image tag on the National Library of Scotland's Dublin sheets reads Re-use: CC-BY (NLS), resolving to CC BY 4.0, with the credit "Reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland" and a link to maps.nls.uk. Two doors that looked right and were not: the Digital Repository of Ireland applies its own CC BY-NC-ND reuse licence and links back to NLS anyway, and Wikimedia Commons holds no OS Ireland Dublin sheets at all. One build constraint follows: the NLS image server caps a request at about half a megapixel, so there is no whole-sheet download and the panels must tile at 512×512 or smaller.

Only the object layer has been surveyed; the place and document layers have not.

What remains is acquisition. The author reopened the dimension on 25 July 2026 (catch C-48). All three layers are surveyed — the object layer cleared on 19 July (C-33) and acquired on 25 July; the place layer in data/atlas-place-candidates.json; the document layer in data/atlas-document-survey.json (C-62). Eight place slots stay open by the author's ruling (C-64) and are not a gap: base document 03 documents several places for six episodes and none for two, and choosing among them is editorial. One gate reopened — NLS returns HTTP 405 to any tool, so its licence tag cannot be re-read and nothing is sourced from it until a person reads the box (C-63). The sequencing is binding: sourcing first, batch by layer, and no panel is assembled before the slots are filled.

Routes to: exposure for the series discipline; visual-arts-experts for the panel review. Registers: 4 primarily, then 1 and 3. This is also the strongest candidate for the project's eventual physical form.

Type VII — Instrument

15 · THE READING LOG

Turn dimension 11 inside out: publish the instrument, not just the result.

A structured log any first reader can use for their own read: session date, pages covered, where they stalled, what they asked, what unblocked them, whether they stopped. Its prompts come from dimension 11's difficulty categories — the kinds of strain one real first reading actually produced.

Revised by the author, 18 July 2026 — self-contained; nothing returns. The site is static, zero-dependence, zero-maintenance. The log lives entirely with the reader: it runs in the browser, keeps its entries on the reader's own device only, and can be printed or saved by the reader for the reader. Nothing is transmitted and nothing is collected; the project receives nothing and maintains nothing. What v2 framed as a growing dataset and a study is withdrawn with that framing (C-22): the log is a tool the reader keeps, and the only dataset this project rests on remains its own reading (n = 1, anchor A10).

Registers: 1 is the instrument itself, and the whole of it.

SEQUENCING

Not by panel rank — by dependency and by what proves the pipeline.

Order Dimension Why here
1st 11 · Difficulty Curve Source material already exists finished (the 117pp Q&A). Cheapest, most original, exercises all four registers end to end
2nd 15 · Reading Log A15 discharged 19 Jul (C-27): 11's nine difficulty kinds are built and published, and C-22 removed the collection the veto's second leg guarded. Unblocked. Self-contained — nothing is collected
3rd 1 · Object Museum Highest panel score; reuses the episode and place scaffolding already built
4th 13 · Constraint Model Needs 03's travel times, which exist. Highest chance of producing a genuine surprise
5th 14 · Atlas Needs images, which needs the other dimensions to know what to photograph
Then 2, 3, then 9

THE ADVISOR SET, AND ITS ROUTING

Nine advisors, composed for building rather than for literary judgement. Full definitions in docs/skills/ulysses-advisors-panel-SKILL.md.

Advisor Lens Owns
Tech Nelson hypertext, transclusion, parallel versions register 2; all cross-referencing
Shneiderman overview first, zoom and filter, details on demand; keyboard floor register 1; dimensions 13 and 15
Lit Senn dislocution; against the lure of grammatical rectification every quotation
Kenner narrative machinery, parallax, the narrator who isn't dimension 8; all fact-extraction
Kiberd the book belongs to ordinary readers dimensions 11 and 15; accessibility
Hist Ginzburg microhistory, the evidential paradigm inference discipline everywhere
Braudel material life; structures not incidents dimensions 1, 3, 4
Chair Warburg the atlas; juxtaposition over argument register 4; dimension 14
Eames delivery; graspable without being stupid register 3

Standing four — Senn, Shneiderman, Braudel, Eames — on every dimension. The rest are trigger-invoked.

Routing to existing skills

METHODOLOGY

The dimension pipeline

  1. Declare the type before the unit. Which of the seven operations is this? A dimension that cannot name its type is probably a Type I in disguise.
  2. Declare the unit. The object, the woman, the crux, the panel, the constraint.
  3. Set the register budget. Not every dimension earns all four.
  4. Collect against the text, page- and episode-anchored, marking present / recalled / hallucinated.
  5. Separate sourced from inferred.
  6. Build the signature device — one per document, encoding something true.
  7. Audit — consistency sweep, then the panel, then the routed skill.
  8. Log — catches, learnings, bundle update.

OPEN QUESTIONS FOR THE AUTHOR

  1. The Type-I cap. The chair recommends building three of the nine inventories and dropping the rest. This is the single most consequential proposal in this document. Accept, adjust the number, or reject. Answered by the author 18 July 2026, and re-affirmed 25 July 2026 (catch C-64): A11 stands. Type I sits at three, the cap is enforced in tools/check.mjs §11a and negative-tested — a fourth Type-I at building turns the build red — and the six unbuilt inventories stay planned by design, not by omission. Reopening A11 is a deliberate, logged decision, not one a session may take by promoting a seventh inventory. The cap is the fix for catch C-07, where ten of twelve dimensions were the same operation.
  2. Sequencing. 11 → 15 → 1 → 13 → 14. The panel ranked 1 first.
  3. Dimension 15 makes the project a studyanswered by the author, 18 July 2026: it does not. The site is static, zero-dependence, zero-maintenance; the log is self-contained and collects nothing. The study framing and its obligations are withdrawn with the collection (C-22).
  4. Dimension 14 may be the project's real destination. If the atlas is the end point, the website and the presentation are staging posts rather than deliverables. Worth knowing early.
  5. Dimension 16 is now specified and its material is in the bundle. Confirm its place in the build order — the chair would put it immediately before dimension 9, since it supplies 9's analytic frame.
  6. One deferred idea, recorded not proposed: the book's method transplanted — one day, one city, this city. That is not a dimension of Ulysses; it is a work of your own that Ulysses would have caused. Noted here so it is not lost.

Base document 04, v2.3 — A16 withdrawn, A18 added 18 July. v2.2 — dimension 16 specified, anchor A17 added 18 July. v2.1 — anchors A13–A16 and dimension 16 added 18 July after panel session 01. Supersedes v1. Written for handoff to a Cowork session.
