THE OFFICE ANSWERS FOR ITSELF

This is the section where the city speaks in its own voice at length — a leaflet, a companion for new arrivals, a corrections channel, an errata slip — and where the book takes its greatest risk. A Place Is Held is the most dangerous document in the collection: it admits every one of its worst cases, and four of the six concessions it makes are stories you have already read. It quotes the book back at you, accurately, as evidence in its own favor.

Diagrammed, the leaflet’s method is a clean structure: concession, then argument, six times. It never lies. It is persuasive in the way that only true things are.

THE NUMBERING IS THE STORY

The errata slip, two sections on, runs one, two, three, then ten consecutive twelves, then thirteen to twenty-one. Errata four to eleven do not exist. Erratum nine is declared never to have issued — by erratum fifteen, after the run of twelves. Erratum sixteen corrects erratum fifteen to read erratum fifteen, since the Office must be able to confirm its own corrections.

You can read the piece and register it as strange. Drawn as twenty-two boxes in printed order, it stops being strange and becomes a diagnosis: this is what a record looks like when it is correcting the same thing and cannot stop.

AND A SEVEN-SECOND FILE NOBODY WILL EVER HEAR

It arrives after the room has closed, one minute after the room closed and five hours after the rule that explains why it cannot be kept, and it is marked delivered.
