Two hundred years is not a long time for a planet. It is barely a breath. The Himalayas do not notice it. The mid-Atlantic ridge does not pause in its spreading. The core continues its slow convection, iron churning against iron in the dark, indifferent to whatever is happening on the skin of things. Two hundred years is a long time only for the things that live and die quickly — the mammals, the insects, the flowering plants that measure their generations in seasons. For them, two hundred years without the dominant predator was enough. It was more than enough. It was a new world.

The forests came first. They had always been waiting. In the decades immediately after the last human departure, the pioneer species moved in — the weeds, the grasses, the scrappy opportunists that thrive on disturbance and ruin. They cracked the pavements of parking lots in São Paulo. They pushed through the tarmac of runways in Heathrow. They climbed the walls of apartment blocks in Shanghai, slowly, patiently, with the blind vegetal persistence that is the oldest strategy on Earth. Within thirty years, the pioneer species had done their work, and the slower trees followed: oaks reclaiming London, beeches marching through the suburbs of Berlin, cedars descending from the hills above Beirut into the city center, their roots gripping the rubble of buildings whose purpose no one alive could remember, because no one alive had hands.

The cities did not fall. That is the wrong word, though it is the one the old stories always used. The cities were absorbed. They became geology. The steel frames of skyscrapers, engineered to last centuries, held their shapes long after the glass had shattered and the concrete had crumbled. They stood like the bones of enormous animals, rusting slowly in the rain, hosting ecosystems in their cavities — falcons in the upper floors, foxes in the lobbies, fungi colonising the drywall in vast, silent, fractal kingdoms. The bridges held longer. The Brooklyn Bridge, the Øresund, the Golden Gate — their cables hummed in the wind like instruments nobody was playing. Some of them still stood after two centuries, though they connected nothing to nothing, their roads overgrown, their purpose dissolved into pure form. They were beautiful. Nobody saw them. This, perhaps, is the purest definition of architecture: a structure that persists after the last person who could explain it is gone.

But the reclamation was not gentle. The old stories — the ones humans had told themselves when they still imagined their own absence — always pictured nature returning like a mother, soft and forgiving, drawing a green blanket over the ruins. The truth was closer to a war. Invasive species, released from the management that had held them in check, exploded. The kudzu that had been creeping across the American South devoured entire counties in a decade, smothering native forests under a monotony of vine. The Burmese pythons that had colonized the Florida Everglades expanded north and west, consuming bird populations that had no evolutionary memory of a predator that size. Rats inherited the cities before the trees did, and for decades the ruins belonged to them — teeming, gnawing, breeding with a ferocity that turned the old human infrastructure into a continent-scale warren. Nature does not forgive. It competes. And the first century after the departure was not a garden. It was an arena.

The fires were the worst of it. Without human suppression, the wildfires that had always been part of the Earth’s ecology returned to their ancient scale. Entire regions burned for months — the boreal forests of Canada, the Mediterranean scrublands, the eucalyptus stands of Australia that had evolved to burn and were, in some biological sense, delighted to do so. The smoke darkened skies across hemispheres. Animal populations crashed and rebuilt and crashed again in cycles of destruction that would have horrified any ecologist still alive to witness them. But no ecologist was. The fires burned, and the rains came, and the seeds that had been waiting in the soil for exactly this sequence — fire then rain then light — germinated in their billions, and the new growth came in thicker and wilder than what had been lost. The Earth was not healing. The Earth was doing what it had always done. We had simply been too present to notice.


The domestic animals were the first casualties of the departure. Nobody had thought to plan for them.

The livestock died in millions. Cattle, bred for docility and milk yield over ten thousand years of selection, stood in their fields and waited for feed that never came. The fences held them until the fences rusted. By then, most had starved. Some broke free and went feral — the hardier breeds, the ones closest to their wild ancestors — and their descendants, generations later, bore little resemblance to the placid animals that had stood in industrial barns. They were leaner, warier, and they did not come when called. The pigs adapted fastest, as pigs always do. Within decades, the feral pig populations of Europe, Asia, and the Americas had become one of the dominant terrestrial mammals, their intelligence and omnivory carrying them through the chaos that killed gentler species. The chickens mostly perished. Nine billion of them at the time of departure, almost all incapable of flight or foraging, almost all dependent on a feeding schedule maintained by a species that had decided it had somewhere better to be.

The dogs were the hardest story, though there was no one left to find it hard. The breeds collapsed first. The pugs, the bulldogs, the cavalier King Charles spaniels — animals engineered for human aesthetics at the cost of their own viability — could not breathe well enough, or hunt well enough, or survive a single winter without shelter. They died in the first years. The larger breeds lasted longer. The German shepherds formed packs. The Labradors, astonishingly, turned out to be competent hunters when hunger overrode ten generations of retrieving tennis balls. But it was the street dogs — the mongrels of Istanbul, of Mumbai, of Mexico City, the ones that had never been fully domesticated, the ones that had always lived in the margins between the human world and the wild one — who inherited the niche. They were already adapted to neglect. They were already adapted to scavenging, to heat, to cold, to the fundamental indifference of the species that had created them and never quite decided whether to love them or discard them. Two hundred years later, the descendants of those street dogs roamed the ruins of six continents, and they looked nothing like the animals in the old photographs. They looked like wolves. Which, of course, is what they had been all along.

In the early years of the emptying, when the cities were half-full and half-gone, a brown mongrel with a torn ear sat on the steps of a shuttered bakery in Beyoğlu — in what was still, just barely, Istanbul — and did not move for three days. She was not injured. She was not starving — the rats were plentiful and she knew how to hunt them. She was waiting. The bakery had been her territory for years: the owner had fed her scraps each morning, and she had slept against the warm wall of the oven vent each night. The owner was gone. The oven was cold. The dog did not understand this in any way that could be called understanding. But she sat, and she waited, and on the fourth day she finally stood, shook herself, and walked down the hill toward the water. She did not look back. Her descendants would be among those that crossed the Bosphorus bridge before its cables finally gave, and their descendants would forget the bakery entirely, and their descendants would run through forests that grew where the district had been. But that first winter, that first waiting — that was the oldest grief on the emptying Earth, and it belonged to an animal that had no name for what she had lost.


The oceans healed faster than anyone had predicted — though by then, the people making predictions were already leaving. The removal of industrial fishing, chemical runoff, and acoustic pollution in a single stroke was an experiment no marine biologist had dared to model, because no marine biologist had imagined it possible. The coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, declared functionally dead in the 2050s, began to recover within decades. New species of coral, adapted to warmer waters, colonized the bleached skeletons of their ancestors and built upward, slowly, in colors that no human eye would catalogue. The fish returned. The sharks returned. The great whales — the blues, the fins, the humpbacks whose populations had been decimated to the edge of genetic viability — multiplied until the oceans carried more cetacean biomass than at any point since the Pleistocene.

The wolves came back to Western Europe. The tigers reclaimed the river deltas of Bangladesh. The elephants, freed from poaching and habitat loss simultaneously, expanded across sub-Saharan Africa in herds so large they reshaped vegetation patterns visible from orbit. In North America, the bison multiplied until the Great Plains moved again with that ancient, undulant motion that the first European settlers had described with a mixture of awe and terror. The predators followed the prey, and the prey followed the grass, and the grass followed the rain, and the rain followed the forests, and the forests followed the absence of the animal that had been cutting them down for ten thousand years. The feedback loops closed. The circles completed themselves. The Earth, it turned out, did not need us. It had tolerated us. And when we left, it simply continued — the way a body continues after a fever breaks.


The rivers were the most dramatic transformation. Humanity had dammed over fifty thousand of the world’s waterways at the peak — choking sediment, fragmenting ecosystems, drowning valleys that had existed since the last ice age. Without maintenance, the dams failed. Not all at once. Some held for decades, their concrete slowly cracking, their spillways clogging. Others gave way in single, catastrophic events — walls of water roaring through canyons that had been dry for a century, scouring everything in their path, and then settling into new channels that were in fact very old channels, channels the rivers remembered even if no one else did. The Yangtze ran free. The Colorado reached the sea again. The Nile delta, no longer starved of sediment, began to rebuild itself, pushing outward into the Mediterranean with the patient ambition of a continent.

In the absence of agriculture, the soils recovered. This was the slowest healing and the most profound. Industrial farming had stripped the topsoil of entire continents, replacing complex microbial ecosystems with chemical monocultures that produced food at the cost of the ground itself. Now the mycorrhizal networks re-established themselves, threading fungal filaments through the darkness beneath the surface, connecting root systems across hectares, exchanging nutrients in an underground economy that predated the invention of money by four hundred million years. The earthworms returned to densities not seen since before the plough. The soil darkened. The soil deepened. If you could have held a handful of it — but there was no one to hold it — you would have smelled the particular sweetness of a world putting itself back together.


Not everything recovered. The sixth mass extinction, already well advanced when the uploads began, had taken species that would not return. The passenger pigeon was gone. The northern white rhinoceros was gone. The vaquita, the golden toad, the Yangtze river dolphin — gone, all of them, their genetic information dissolved into entropy, their ecological niches either filled by other species or left as permanent absences, like missing teeth in a jaw that still functions but never quite looks right. Evolution would fill the gaps eventually, as it always had, as it had after every extinction. But evolution works in millions of years. Two centuries is not patience. It is a held breath.

The climate had settled into a new equilibrium. The carbon of three centuries of industrialization was being slowly reabsorbed — by the forests, by the oceans, by the geological processes that regulate the Earth’s thermostat on timescales too long for any species to notice. The ice was returning to the poles, the glaciers rebuilding themselves one winter at a time. It would take millennia. The Earth had millennia. It had nothing but millennia.


And beneath all of it, threaded through the crust of the planet like a nervous system buried in stone, the machinery continued.

It drew no attention to itself. It had been designed not to. The infrastructure that sustained the uploaded — the computational substrate, the power systems, the cooling networks, the self-repairing relay stations — occupied a fraction of the Earth’s surface and produced no emissions, no noise, no light visible to any animal eye. Its energy came from the sun and from the Earth’s own heat, captured by systems that would function for thousands of years without intervention. It was, in engineering terms, the most refined thing humanity had ever built: a machine so quiet and so durable that the planet could forget it was there. The foxes denning in its surface vents did not know they were sleeping above the continuation of an entire civilization. The roots that grew around its buried cables did not know they were embracing the last monument to a species that had once believed itself the point of everything.

Whether anything still moved inside it — whether the fourteen billion had become more, or fewer, or something else entirely — was a question the external world could not answer and did not ask. The substrate was sealed. It communicated nothing outward. It received nothing from without. It simply persisted, a closed world within an open one, like a dream the Earth was having that it could not quite wake from.


This was the world at the turn of the twenty-fourth century: a planet of wind and water and returning life, indifferent to its own history, carrying in its depths a silence that was not empty but inhabited. A world that belonged to no one and was witnessed by no one. The hawks circled above the ruins of Manhattan and did not know they were ruins. The octopuses in the flooded tunnels of the Tokyo Metro explored their new coral kingdom with eight arms and three hearts and no sense of irony. The baobabs in the Sahel grew wider and older with each passing decade, their trunks swelling like the bellies of sleeping gods.

It was, by any measure that did not require a human to hold the measuring instrument, a beautiful world. Perhaps more beautiful than it had ever been. The colors were deeper because the air was cleaner. The nights were darker because no city lights competed with the stars. The silence was more complete — except it was not silence at all. It was the sound of everything that is not human, a symphony of extraordinary complexity and volume that had been playing for four billion years beneath the din of a single species’ brief and noisy occupation.

Nobody heard it. Nobody needed to hear it. The music existed for itself, and that was enough.


The object entered the solar system from the direction of Cygnus, moving at a velocity that no natural body could sustain on that trajectory. It decelerated as it passed the orbit of Jupiter, which is not something asteroids do. It adjusted course near Mars, which is not something comets do. By the time it crossed the orbit of the Moon, it had slowed to a velocity consistent with orbital insertion, and its shape — visible now to the substrate’s passive sensors, which noted it without comment, the way a sleeping body notes a change in temperature — was not the shape of anything the solar system had ever produced.

It was long and narrow, like a seed, or a bone, or a hand extended toward something it could not yet name. Its surface was dark but not black — a deep, mottled grey-brown that absorbed light unevenly, suggesting not metal but something organic, or something that had once been organic, or something that did not observe the distinction. It did not broadcast. It did not scan, at least not in any frequency the substrate’s dormant receivers could detect. It simply arrived, with the unhurried deliberateness of a creature that has been travelling for a very long time and is not surprised by what it finds.

It entered orbit. It circled the planet three times, each pass lower than the last, as though tasting the atmosphere, reading the magnetic field, mapping the coastlines of continents it had never seen. On the third pass, something in its trajectory shifted — a slight deviation over the southern landmasses, a pause in its otherwise steady descent, as though it had noticed something beneath the surface that the surface did not advertise. The adjustment lasted seconds. Then the orbit resumed. On the fourth pass, a smaller shape detached from the main body — a craft, if that word applied, roughly the size of a shipping container, moving with a fluidity that suggested neither rockets nor wings but something else, something that used the planet’s own gravitational field as a medium rather than an obstacle.

The craft descended through the stratosphere. It passed through a layer of cloud above the Atlantic and emerged into sunlight. It crossed the coast of what had once been Portugal, banked gently eastward over the forests that had swallowed the Iberian peninsula, and came to rest — if rest is the word for a landing so gentle that the grass beneath it barely bent — in a wide valley between two rivers, in a place that had once been called Andalusia, in a country that had once been called Spain, on a continent that had once believed itself the center of the world.

The grass straightened. A bird, startled by the shadow, resumed its song. The rivers continued their patient work of reaching the sea.

For a long time, nothing else happened. The craft sat in the valley, dark and still, while the sun moved across the sky and the wind carried the scent of wild rosemary across the hills. Then a seam appeared along its flank — not a door, not a hatch, but a seam, as though the surface were remembering a division it had temporarily forgotten — and the seam widened, and the light inside was not a color the valley had seen before, and something stepped out into the air of a world it had crossed a very great distance to reach.

He stood in the grass and breathed. The air entered him and he was not harmed by it. The gravity held him and he did not fall. The sun touched his skin — if it was skin — and he turned his face toward it, and closed his eyes — if they were eyes — and remained like that, still, as though this single sensation, warmth on a face, was worth the entire journey.

The birds, after a while, resumed. The insects returned to their circuits. The valley, which had not been visited by a standing, breathing, bipedal creature in over two hundred years, absorbed the stranger with the same indifference it had shown to everything else.

Whatever he was, he was here now. And the world, which had learned to exist without witnesses, had one again.
