DIMENSION 14 · THE DIAGRAM REGISTER · FIFTY-FOUR SLOTS, DRAWN AS THEY STAND
Eighteen rows, one per episode; three columns, one per layer. A solid square is a picture the atlas holds. An open square is a slot still to source. A cross is a slot refused by one of the author’s ratified image rules, and a barred circle is a slot where a survey searched and found nothing admissible. The gold ring is anchor A5 drawn: it marks a place whose subject base document 03 does not settle, where a person chose among several the record offers without ranking them. A square with no ring is the record’s own.
This is not a progress bar. Read down the place column and the shape of the record appears — the day this project holds is documented unevenly, thickly at some hours and not at all at others. An atlas of a day cannot be more complete than the day it is drawn from, and the open squares in the document column are a different kind of gap from the crosses beside them.
Caveats
Drawn by tools/build-atlas-diagram.mjs from the source manifest, the derived slot targets, the recorded image choices and the fetched provenance — the same four files the build checks against one another — so this figure cannot drift from the state it draws. It counts 43 of 54 slots filled.
It is a picture of the work as well as of the day, and the second is the point. A slot left open because the record documents nothing is a fact about 16 June 1904 as this project holds it, not a fact about how far the sourcing has got. The two are drawn differently for that reason.
Episode titles are schema scaffolding, not Joyce’s (A2). The gold ring records that a subject was chosen rather than derived (A5); who chose it, and why, is in the atlas’s own colophon and in data/atlas-place-image-choices.json. Nothing here is sourced from a repository RIGHTS.md clause 7 rules out.
