A Systems Theory
for Today

The old total systems were written by one mind, in one book. This one is built by a panel that disagrees on purpose — and by you.


The question

Since Heidegger, no single thinker has tried to explain the whole. Was that a failure of nerve — or of method?

For most of history we had total systems: theological cosmologies, then the great rational systems. A century ago the ambition fractured. The wager here is that a systems theory adequate to the 2020s can no longer be built by the old method — one mind, one book — but might be built by a new one: living, distributed, plural, computational, and continuously argued. We test it by trying to do it, using seven present-day symptoms as the pressure: fertility, dopamine, propaganda, why-now, climate, coordination, and populism.

Ten thinkers, reconstructed as intellectual positions. A panel that shared a standpoint could not test the thing that matters — so this one is composed around fault lines. Pick an axis and watch the room split. The colour is the position.

      How the whole came apart — and where the ambition went

      The grand system did not simply vanish. It was dismantled, and then it migrated.

      –350 → 1600s

      The first total systems

      Theological cosmologies, then the encyclopedic systematizers — Aristotle mapping all of knowledge bottom-up from observation, later fused with revelation into a single ordered whole.

      1781 → 1831

      The peak: Kant to Hegel

      The last grand rational systems, built in earnest. Kant makes the order partly a contribution of the knowing mind; Hegel attempts the whole of history and spirit as one unfolding system. After Hegel (d. 1831), no one builds at that scale and is believed.

      The five hammers

      The totality is taken apart: Nietzsche dissolves its value-ground; Gödel (1931) proves no formal system can be both complete and consistent; knowledge specializes past any one mind; Heidegger reframes the systematizing drive as the symptom; Lyotard (1979) names the mood — incredulity toward metanarratives.

      The migration

      The ambition moves rather than dies — into systems science (Bertalanffy, Wiener, Prigogine, Meadows), into social-systems theory (Luhmann — the direct counter-example to "no one tried"), and into contemporary syntheses: Big History, metamodernism, and cliodynamics (Turchin), the living proof that data-driven, computational social theory is possible at all.

      Not a consensus — three rival starting points. A is the condition, B is a mechanism inside it, C is the response. Together, they are an instance of the third one.

      The Adaptation Gap

      The condition · diagnosis

      The systems we build now outrun the capacity of the humans and institutions inside them. God-like tools, medieval institutions, paleolithic instincts — and the gap between them is widening. Most symptoms are downstream.

      Strength as a theory · 7/10
      Named weakness — hard to falsify. "Change is fast" can explain anything until the gap is made measurable. That's the top next task.

      The Optimization Ecology

      The mechanism · critique

      Markets, media, and machines have become self-reproducing optimizers that capture our drives — attention, dopamine, outrage — as fuel, and increasingly run without human ends. Selection did the designing; there is no cabal.

      Named weakness — conspiracy-shape. It reads like a villain story and must hold the line: selected to capture, not designed to.

      Distributed Coherence

      The response · reflexive

      Since no one mind holds the whole, a livable systems theory must be held as a plural, living, computational commons — not a monograph. This project is the prototype. The medium is the thesis.

      Strength as a theory · 6/10
      Named weakness — a method is not a meaning. It may route around the meaning-wound that Nietzsche insists is the ground of it all.

      The old total system is not coming back. What may be possible is this — a structured, honest, plural, self-correcting commons of sense-making, which understands the whole not by fusing it in one mind, but by holding it, argued, among many.

      Six objections kept alive, on purpose

      1. Heidegger — filling the gap with a better system only deepens the enframing.
      2. Nietzsche — every structural map routes around the meaning-wound, which is the ground the rest stands on.
      3. Turchin & Marx — a single master-problem trades testability for a satisfying story.
      4. Kant — all of it is a system of appearances; never mistake the map for the territory.
      5. Luhmann — the honest form is a theory of differentiation, not a unified doctrine; and beware a project optimizing for its own survival.
      6. Le Guin — if it becomes a machine for mastering rather than a tool for living, it has joined the disease it set out to diagnose.
